Frederick Hutchison Page THE MOTHERS OF NOSTALGIA signed and dated `73 acrylic on board Kerbel, C. & Wright, J., Fred Page: Ringmaster of the Imagination, Cecil Kerbel & Jean Wright: South Africa, 2011, illustrated in colour on p 101 The Mothers of Nostalgia is an important example of PageÂ’s fondness to express innovative surreal topics. The title of the painting challenges our preconceived ideas regarding longing. The figures take on the appearance of passive women beings without normal heads with a male figure, equally without a recognizable head, strolling in the background - possibly species from another world. On taking a closer look at the painting one sees an elegantly dressed lady promenading in a desolate landscape with a female positioned on an altar-type casket hinting to death. These themes are painted behind a double frame with a white door on the right suggesting an entrance to a bizarre world. To add to the mystery a young girl in the right foreground leads a creature-like pet on a leash, while a stump-headed woman alongside holds a baby and possibly looks on. The painting is executed in PageÂ’s distinctive painterly style where he applied his superb technique of thinly painted layers to achieve this dreamlike impression. F. S. 1 80 by 115cm
