Dowry chest from Istalif, central Afghanistan. A very traditional piece of furniture made from cedar wood. The sliding door is usual in furniture from this area. with a sliding door. 122 x 140 x 72cm. Late 20th c. Notes: There is plenty of varied opinion on the use of chests such as this. Some describe them as a dowry chest where the bride will store her handicrafts. I have never seen one this size used for that. I have seen like this and much bigger used to store grain.
