A Queen Anne oak bureau, the slope front opening to a fitted interior with well and with drawers to front with brass drop handles with pierced backplates and raised on bracket feet. Width 68.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This bureau is in generally good untouched, unrestored condition. The top has old paint marks and water stain marks. The slope front has a loss to the top moulded edge above the lock plate and there is a repair to the top of the bureau itself indicating that the lock has been forced open at some point. The bureau flap is in generally good order. The interior door is detached. The remainder of the interior is in generally reasonable condition and we have the two aperture tops which appear to be missing in the photograph. The drawer fronts are in generally good condition. The handles are later replacements and there is faint evidence of other handle holes on each drawer front. The sides both have full length vertical cracks on the join between the panels. The bracket feet which appear to be original are solid and in good order as are the backboards.
A Queen Anne walnut bureau bookcase, with moulded cornice above a pair of mirrored doors with ogee moulded mirror surrounds and enclosing shelves and with candle slides beneath, the base with slope front to fitted interior above a series of drawers with brass drop handles and shaped backplates and raised on bracket feet. Width 82 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cornice is in generally good condition. The sides of the top are in reasonable order with minor surface scratches and with stress cracks to the veneers to both sides at the foot of the top. The doors are not warped. There are some pieces of mirror frame moulding missing and also a section on the door centre edging strip. The slope front to the base has a number of old veneer repairs and there are areas that are slightly bubbled. The sides of the piece have stress cracks. There is some moulding missing on the right hand return. All drawers have had different sets of handles over the years and pegged and filled holes are evident on all drawer fronts. There is some veneer missing between the drawer and runners. The drawer interiors all have repairs across the centre. The bracket feet are probably later replacements but are solid. In our opinion the piece has had some relatively poor restoration perhaps 20-30 years ago and a proper restoration is required.
A 19th century Continental oak Ecclesiastical door, possibly confessional, with linen fold panels and Gothic carving. Width 77 cm, height 224 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This piece is generally in good order with no serious condition issues. The outer door frame is structurally sound. There are some minor edge scuffs and scratches as one would expect. The arch to the top section has various old hairline stress fractures in both sides but no losses. The pair of doors are in generally good order. The right hand door has had a break to the centre carved diamond shaped point. There is a visible crack at the narrow point of this. The bottom door is in generally good condition. There is no evidence of any woodworm that we can see.
An oak sectional bookcase, Globe Wernicke, three tier, with lead glazed doors and low drawer. Width 85 cm, height 128 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Other than having a cracked glass the hood is in generally good order. There are two minor stress fractures at the rear of the arch on each side of the glazed door frame. The sides of the piece are in good order as is the trunk door and base. There are no significant issues with the case. The dial is a little dirty and one spandrel requires reattaching. The clock is currently ticking on the going train but not striking. There is a problem with the left hand winding mechanism and the right hand winding mechanism is fully wound.
A Regency mahogany side cabinet/bookcase, with rear mirrored galleried upstand with four turned pillars with brass capitals, the inverted breakfront fitted with a series of shelves to the centre and flanked on either side by a cupboard door with brass grilles, with turned columns on either side and raised on lobed feet. Width 213 cm (see illustration).
A George III mahogany tray topped commode, with pair of doors above a sliding front modelled as a drawer and complete with liner. Width 53.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Structurally this piece is very sound and is a good colour. There are some minor issues. The top surface is slightly warped and has numerous old watermarks. The right hand side of the piece is in good condition. The left hand side has two stress fractures in the carcass. The rear panel is in good order. The doors have a good colour. The right hand door has some old staining and a very slight warp at the bottom centre. The commode drawer is in good condition and operates as it should.
A George III yew wood hanging corner cupboard, with partially glazed door with wooden astragals and flanked by canted angles. Width 76 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is in reasonable order. There is a small loss to the top right hand corner of the applied moulded cornice. The canted angles are both in generally good condition. The door is not warped but does have minor scratches and the odd very small piece of cockbeading missing to the astragals. The centre lower oval glass panel is cracked and there is a small crack to the top right hand glass panel. The bottom door which is separate from the top is also not warped. Both locks are present but we do not have a key and the two ivory or bone half round catches are very old but clearly must be later. The right hand return moulding is missing.
A George III mahogany linen press, with moulded crossbanded cornice above a pair of well figured doors enclosing trays, the base fitted with three drawers with wooden knob handles and raised on turned feet. Width 132 cm. (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This press is in generally good condition. There are very minor scuffs to the cornice but no significant issues. The sides of the piece and back are in good order with no issues. All drawer fronts are in good condition. There have been some minor repairs to the cockbeading. The turned feet are original and in good condition. The doors are of good colour. The doors are not warped and shut correctly when the interior trays are removed. When the trays are in place two are slightly proud of the carcass and this slightly impedes the closing of the door. This could easily be rectified by removing a millimeter or so from the rear of the offending trays.
An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, with swans neck pediment above an arched glazed door enclosing the painted dial and eight day striking movement by D. Lyon, Lanark, the trunk with applied mouldings and arched door and raised on short turned feet. Height including finial 230 cm.
A Chinoiserie lacquered Grandmother clock, green and gilt and with weight driven movement striking on twelve gongs. Height 174.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The rear of the movement is stamped F H S with a clock face Trademark underneath and Germany. It is also marked 1151-050.66CM/80.166. Movement strikes on 12 gongs and has three weights. We have the pendulum. We have not had the clock operating however the movement looks to be clean and complete and appears to operate as it should when weight is applied to each train. We are not sure as to the age of the clock but would have thought probably 1960's or 70's. It could be earlier. The case is in generally good condition. The hood is in good order with no significant damage only minor scuffs and losses to the gilding. The case itself has some minor scuffs and paint losses which should be evident from our image. These are in the main to the left and right hand sides of the door. There are also stress fractures between the joins to the top right and left hand corners of the door. There are some minor scuffs to the side panels. The gilding is in generally good order and the bracket feet are original. We believe that F S H stands for FRANZ HERMLE & SON.
A George III mahogany cased longcase clock, with swans neck pediment above the arched glazed door enclosing a silvered brass dial marked "Rob. Alexander, Leith" and with two-train musical movement, flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals, with long arched trunk door and conforming base raised on short turned feet. Height 216 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This clock is in generally good condition. The hood is in very good order with no significant damage or losses. The case is similarly in very good condition. The door is not warped and the base is also in very good condition. The silvered brass dial is very dirty but serviceable. The movement is dirty but appears to be complete and whilst we have not had the clock working when weight is applied to both the going and the strike train the movement does appear to operate. The movement is on six bells and the large main strike bell. When the hands are operated this would suggest that the movement chimes on the quarter, the half, the three quarter and also on the full. The tune is probably a simple folk tune and not specifically Whittington or Westminster chimes. We do not know the name of the tune. We have both weights, the pendulum and the key.
An Arts & Crafts oak hanging corner cupboard, with single door flanked by flat pilasters. Width 77 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This lot is in generally good condition with no significant damage, no repairs and no restoration. There are very minor scuffs at the edges of the piece and small paint marks from decorating which will easily remove.
An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, Scottish, with swans neck pediment above the arched painted dial with spandrels emblematic of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and scene of Queen Mary's Landing to the arch, the dial marked "Jas. Summers, Hamilton" and with two-train striking movement, with long trunk door and base raised on short turned feet. Height 226 cm.
A 19th century mahogany cased shop regulator, the dial inscribed "Oldridge, Birkenhead", the movement by Condliff, Liverpool, with mercury weighted pendulum. Dial diameter 35.5 cm, height 250 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is in generally extremely good condition. The case is in extremely good order indeed with no significant issues. As one would expect there has been the odd minor repair but no significant issues. Looking at the hood there are minor stress cracks in the veneers in places but again these are not problematic. The trunk door is not warped. The veneers around the door are in good condition and the same can be said of the base. The side panels are in generally good condition. The bottom left and bottom right hand panels have minor vertical veneer stress fractures. The feet are original and in good condition. The movement appears to be in very good order. It is clean and complete and there are no missing elements. The mercury has been removed from the pendulum and we have not had the clock ticking. When weight is applied the movement does however appear to tick and operate as it should.
A George III mahogany longcase clock by W. Nicholson of Whitehaven, the case with a swans neck pediment above an arched glazed door enclosing the 12 inch arched brass dial with penny moon and tidal dial to the arch, with eight day striking movement, date aperture and subsidiary seconds dial, flanked by fluted columns, with long arched trunk door, fluted and reeded quarter columns and conforming base supported on ogee bracket feet. Height 225 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This clock is in generally very good order. It is currently ticking away. it keeps good time and the tidal dial and moon face appear to be operating correctly. The movement is generally clean and appears to be in good condition generally. The seatboard appears to be original although slightly less wide than the tops of the cheeks. The case is certainly contemporary with the movement and very clearly of Whitehaven type. The hood is generally in very good condition with no issues. The door is not warped. Whilst we do not feel that the clock is a marriage there is a gap all the way around the dial by the mask. The trunk door is slightly warped but does not require any pressure to close and lock. There is a slight gap at the top centre between the top centre of the door and the case itself. The case is generally in very good order with no significant issues. The clock could be used and enjoyed or resold in its current condition with out the need for any repairs or restoration. The dial width is 12 ins.
A collection of three Edwardian mantle clocks, one balloon, one lancet and one domed by Mappin & Webb. Tallest 21 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The small Lancet clock has numerous hairline cracks to the dial and the brasswork is badly tarnished. The case itself is however in good condition and the clock does wind but we have not had the piece ticking. The balloon clock case has two small old edge dents, one opposite the numeral 4, the other opposite numeral 10 on the side of the case. The face is a little dirty but undamaged. The mechanism is overwound. The Mappin and Webb clock is reasonably clean. One of the brass feet is missing. The face seems to be in generally good order although a little dirty. We do not have a key for the clock and the movement is dirty but does appear to operate when the escapement is turned. The rear case door is missing.
