TERENTIUS. De ses comedien. Verduytst door H. Zwaerdecroon. Rotterdam, I. Naeranus, 1648, (8), 475 pp. W. engr. front. (bound after ti.). 12°. Cont. overlapping vellum w. manuscr. title on spine. NOTE:Very good copy, with old owner's initials "L v L" in calligraphed cartouche on verso title-p. and with owner's entry "Cs. Cl. Callenbach Ao. 4de m: 1e dag 1818" on upper pastedown. This must be Cornelis Carel Callenbach (1803-1873), reformed preacher with the Nickname "De Profeet van de Veluwe", who was 15 years old when he acquired the book. This fits the beautifully printed, very rare edition (apparently meant for use at the Latin school) perfectly. Apparently only 3 copies in NCC. - Geerebaert p. 173.

HILLESUM -- BOTTERMAN-v.d. PLUYM, A.C.G., uitg. [= D. KONING]. Ohcl. w. lettering in blue on front side. (Endpapers and paste downs a bit foxed/browned, a bit loosening and a small, light ink stain on p. 5, some scribbling in ink on r° last endpaper, but a very good copy). NOTE:Clandestine publication of two letters by Etty Hillesum (the third was written by the editor: David Koning), the first in December 1942 and the second on the 24th of August 1943, written from Camp Westerbork. Only 100 copies were printed. The proceeds benefited the resistance. Unintentionally, Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) erected a monument to what happened in Camp Westerbork. She described life within the barbed wire fence in a rare, penetrating, sometimes even poetic way: dramatic, colourful, bitter, intense. And always under the doom of the train, which left every Tuesday for the east, to a land from which everyone feared they would never return. - Numbered 'XXXI' and initialed in ink. Extremely rare. De Jong 664 erroneously mentions 1913 for the fictitious date and 1944 as the real year of publication.

The movement does tick over with the seconds dial turning freely. However, the date dial is loose and the bell does not seem a very good fit (the hammer misses it, unless it is touching the back of the dial, in which case it makes a clunk rather than chime).
