An early 18th century, oak press cupboard, the upper section with carved frieze bearing the date 1708 and monogram `A R`, with a carved central panel below depicting two doves, with two small fielded panel doors either side, the base with moulded top, over a carved frieze, with single panelled door below, flanked by two panels with carved scroll motifs, raised on stile supports, 152 x 155 x 56 cm.
Audrey Cruddas, British, Costume Designer, 1912-1979- Red Motorbike; watercolour and bodycolour, signed and dated 1971, 52x79cm Note: Audrey Cruddas was a costume and scene designer, painter and potter. Born in Johannesburg she moved to England. Studied art at St. John`s Wood School of Art, Royal Academy Schools and Bram Shaw School of Drawing and Painting. During the war she worked as a `Land Girl` in the Women`s Land Army. At the end of the War she began to design costumes for the theatre and was quickly talent spotted by the dancer and actor Sir Robert Helpmann. soon becoming one of the leading modern theatre designers of the post war period. In the early 1950`s she became involved with the dynamic art community which included: John Aldridge, Edward Bawden, George Chapman, Stanley Clifford-Smith, Joan Glass, Walter Hoyle, Shelia Robinson, Michael Rothenstein and Marianne Straub among others. Cruddas lived in Walton House, Great Bardfield, next door to Edward Bawden`s Brick House.
A scarce Chad Valley clockwork tinplate ‘Games’ Delivery Van. Produced in the 1930’s and again just after the end of WW2 in 1946. This popular toy was called the ‘Games’ van because of the many games produced by the maker illustrated on its roof and to the upper sides of the vehicle. Measuring 25cm it was powered by a simple forward only clockwork motor, fitted with a period Dennis style radiator grill and tinplate lights, ‘CV10032’ number plate to front and rear, two piece tinplate wheels and opening rear door. To the sides are also the Royal Warrant and crest, plus the company name ‘The Chad Valley Co.Ltd, Harborne England’. GC for age some wear/light rusting. Clockwork motor in working order, with a key.
