Nicholas, Birmingham, the arch painted with a titled portrait of Lord Nelson, rolling moon phase flanked by two ships of the line, spandrels with Britannia and Minerva, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds and calendar dials, twin-winding holes, eight-day movement striking on a bell, the substantial case with swan neck pediment, shaped rectangular door to waist, flanked by brass-mounted reeded Corinthian columns, canted base, 239cm high, c. 1805 William Nicholas was apprenticed to his father Charles and by the time of the latter's death in 1785, was in partnership with him. He continued in business on his own account until about 1825. There is a clock by Nicholas in a very similar case (but without the commemorate decoration to the dial) in the collections of the National Trust at Little Clarendon, Wiltshire. A George III oak longcase clock, 32cm circular painted dial inscribed Towlson, Chilwell, Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals, date aperture, thirty-hour movement striking on a bell, the hood with Greek key cornice, brass-capped Doric columns, shaped rectangular door to waist, skirted base, 194cm high, c. 1800John Towlson was born 1775 in Attenborough, Nottinghamshire and was apprenticed in Nottingham 1789-1796 before setting up in business in Chilwell, dying in the 1840s. By his wife Mary, he was father of the eminent Norwich engineer Thomas Towlson (1805-1873).

Pattinson/Repton, 96.5cm high.John Whitehurst II (1761-1834) was apprenticed in Congleton to his father James and succeeded to the firm started in Derby by his famous uncle, John Whirtehurst FRS (1713-1788). His son John (1788-1855) was apprenticed to him 1802-1809 after which he joined his father in business, their products thereafter being signed Whitehurst & Son/Derby and numbered from a year or so later, suggesting this instrument was made c. 1809/1810.Revd. John Pattinson was vicar of Repton from 1804. Dr. J C Cox, writing in 1878 of an ancient stone under the tower of the church, 'It will scarcely be credited that a late incumbent (Rev. John Pattinson) had it taken away and cut and dressed to form a door-step for the parsonage dairy!'.
