Pauline Moore was a twenty year old model when she wore the bracelet aboard the Greek ship Lakonia as it set sail from Southampton on December 19th 1963 on an eleven day Christmas cruise. Four days into the voyage disaster struck as fire broke out with the Lakonia seven hours of Madeira. Some 128 of 646 passengers and 376 crew on board were to lose their lives. Pauline Moore was lowered in a lifeboat and eventually rescued by a British cargo ship The Montcalm seven hours later

Lot 2115

A Circa 1820's Horn Brisé Fan, the gothic sticks à la cathedrale, gold used to highlight the carved and pierced shaping and further detail which corresponds to architecture of the period. Barrel head, carved to show as a spiral when the fan is open, the rivets finished with turquoise. The horn is mottled and gives the appearance of tortoiseshell, an unusual feature. The recto is painted with a detailed scene in front of an ancient stone church or cathedral, a vast nave to the left, the exterior peppered with ancient columns in various states of repair. Three tiny figures are waiting at, or approaching the door of the church. Blue sky offsets rocky hilltops and bushes in the background. The verso is plain but presents the mottling of the horn in various deep shades. Guard length 6.75 inches or 17cm. In good order, no loss noted to the tips, ribbon sound, paint not rubbed, one guard slightly warped.
