YEATS, W.B.The other cheated deadFirst and only publication of the last of Yeats’ poems in memory of Major Robert Gregory, ‘Reprisals’, in No. 2 of the Ulster poetry periodical Rann (Autumn 1948). It was published there to mark the return of Yeats’ remains to Sligo, and ‘by the kindness of Mrs. Yeats’. A very good copy in original wrappers.Yeats finished his poem in 1920, but withheld it from publication after a request from Lady Gregory, who thought the timing ‘unpropitious’, soon after the Bloody Sunday killings; probably the real reason was that she disliked the notion that her beloved son was ‘cheated’ in death. With its powerful closing lines, it is a direct comment on the Black-and-Tan terror in rural Ireland. The passage about ‘new-married women’ refers to Ellen Quinn, shot dead while holding her child outside her front door in Kiltartan, by men in a passing military lorry. The poem is not in any of Yeats’ collections, and is not in his Collected Poems.

Arts & Crafts sideboard in the manor of Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple, Devon. Dentil cornice above bevel plate glass mirror with pot shelf below. Base with two short drawers above two single doors flanking central repousse copper panel. Original copper finished handles, brass lever locks. 168cm (66in) wide. Condition report: Left hand door has had bead to closure damaged. Shelf to same side has been raised by installation of two brackets which could easily be removed and returned to the original position.

Condition report: Original steel lock replacement door close astragal, small section on moulding replace bottom left.

Condition report: Two decorative fret work brackets missing from stationery compartment, replacement brass handle.

Early 19th century mahogany twin pedestal sideboard circa 1830. Back board with double scroll decoration sitting on rectangular top with inverted front frieze, fitted three drawers all pine lined with blue paper finishing. Standing on two pedestal cupboards each with single recess panelled door, bobbin turn beading, bun feet with reeded moulding. 153cm (60in) wide. Condition report: Good overall condition replacement locks.

Pair of late 19th century Sherrington design mahogany bedside cabinets each with rectangular top with single door (left and right handed) inlaid with oval framed in sycamore and cross banded in tulip wood, standing on square section tapering legs with satinwood string. 37cm (14in) wide. Condition report: Both cabinets in ready to use condition.

Early 19th century mahogany linen press, ogee top mould cornice above two single panelled doors with brass astragal covering five sliding trays, base with two short and two long drawers, oak linings, brass bale handles, bracket feet. 130cm (51in) wide. Condition report: Interior with one tray missing, brass hinges to door, bottom left hinge strained and damaged, wood which has now been repaired, section of bead on left hand side missing, original brass bale handles, overall condition average to fair with surface scratches right hand side of press with two cracks running from top to bottom, probably caused by central heating.

Hard stone inset tops, oak lined single drawer above cupboard door with quartered veneer and moulded beading, four swept legs.40cm (16in) wide each. Condition report: Hard stone stops of different colours, the interior of one cupboard has ceramic lining which is damaged, the other cupboard lined in white marble, one spring loaded latch damaged, overall condition fair.
