Potter (Beatrix, afterwards Beatrix Heelis, writer and illustrator, 1866-1943) Autograph Letter signed to "Dear Miss Wilson", 2pp., 8vo, Castle Cottage, Sawrey, Ambleside, 4th July 1942, regarding the use of the Women's Land Army on farms in the Lake District and their remuneration , "In a general way - a much better class are joining the Land Army, because a healthy out door life appeals to girls instead of the unfortunate conditions pertaining to factory life, and to at least one of the services. As regard wages: they are a lot for a small farmer to pay to a beginner; but what the girl receives in cash is not too much. The wages paid too the Forestry girls are most absurd. One woman doing piece work is said to be receiving L11 a fortnight. It is upsetting to men to hear of such a wage. It is to be hoped the girls don't find winter evenings too dull. I am very glad to think that you who know the possibilities of social amusement & interest in Hawkshead will help them. I have been wishing to help but I am getting slow & tired", folds.

* DAVID SASSOON (BRITISH 1888 - 1978),DRUMMORE VIADUCT, BY GATEHOUSEwatercolour on paper, titled label verso image size 26cm x 36cm, overall size 46cm x 56cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Handwritten labels verso.Note: a rare auction appearance for a work by the Kirkcudbright resident. Sassoon came to Kirkcudbright about 1920. He lived firstly in a studio in Castle Street, then at 3 High Street. His wife found it less easy to adjust to living in the tiny artist colony and encouraged her husband to buy the house next door and convert the two properties into one home. David Sassoon was a man of means and his financial independence allowed him to work as he chose and not pay undue deference to whether his pictures sold or not. However, his work was well collected and he was both popular and respected by the other Kirkcudbright artists. Mrs Sassoon eventually persuaded her husband to move back to the south of England but he returned from time to time and used a hut at Carrick Shore as a holiday home and studio.
