A set of five Chinese 'Door of Hope Mission' dolls, early 20th century, carved and lacquered wood with silk and linen costume, depicting three male and two female figures from varying social classes, 23-26cm. (5)Footnote: Following the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, a non-denominational mission was established in Shanghai to help and support Chinese girls and young women in need of sanctuary from widespread and endemic mistreatment. Among the educative activities and pastimes they engaged in was making, decorating and clothing a range of dolls which were designed to represent men and women of differing social classes. The dolls were sold to generate funds to maintain the mission and its activities.One missing the left foot.  General signs of age throughout including fading to the costumes, some small holes/tares to the textile, small flakes, scuffs and cracks to the lacquer.  Refer to images.

Thomas Henry Kendall: a group of carved wood architectural features from the Chapel Street showroomIncluding three carved oak panels of lozenge form, each carved with wild flowers and foliage, originally forming part of a staircase, 51x22cm, set into a later softwood mount, 201x35cm, a series of further rectangular carved oak door panels by Kendall similarly carved with wild flowers, all unmounted: seven at 25x18cm; five at 35x18cm and six at 43x18cm, five carved oak panels in the Elizabethan style, possibly by other hands, 39x29cm, six carved spandrels containing flora and fauna, 33x36cm, three carved stained beech balusters, 67cm, and a length of balustrade, 132cm long.Provenance: Acquired in 1957 at the dispersal sale of Thomas Henry Kendall's Chapel Street showroom and studio, thence by descent to the vendor.Footnote: In a feature written for the Connoissuer magazine on Thomas Henry Kendall in 1956, a year before the Chapel Street showroom was dismantled, a staircase is illustrated showing the balustrade as well as a door showing some of the panels in the present lot.As found condition - varying but ranging from fair/good to distressed.  Please refer to images.

Lot 563

A German walnut coin-operated 19.5in disc polyphon, circa 1880-90, the cabinet with shell cresting and turned pilasters flanking a glazed door, each side with a penny coin slot, with sixteen discs, 69cm wide x 40cm deep x 124cm high.Case shows signs of age including general wear throughout, repair and small loss to top right door spandrel.  Top/cornice cresting is loose.  Door hinges repositioned and recess cut inside cabinet sides at the top.  Chipping around key hole to coin drawer.  Evidence of old worm in places. Movement winds and runs.  All teeth present and intact.  Plays well with a good sound. Coin slots to each side accept penny coins which drop down the shute but do not trigger the movement to play - this will require servicing to remedy.  Presumed originally to have been made with a cabinet base but this is not present.

A George III oak brass dial longcase clock Pullan of Bradford, the hood with arch top and full turned and boxwood strung columns, the trunk with canted door inlaid with a shell patera and satinwood banding, the base box with conforming inlay, raised on bracket feet, the 12in (30.5cm) brass dial with silvered sun boss to the arch and silvered chapter rim with black Roman and Arabic numerals, within moulded spandrels, the four-pillar eight-day movement striking on a bell, with two brass weights and pendulum, 49cm wide x 24cm deep x 214cm high.

A late 17th century/early 18th century lacquered longcase clock, the later associated case with chinoiserie decoration, the rectangular hood with an ogee cornice above an arched door, enclosing a dial with a possibly later arch with a silvered convex boss engraved 'John Smart, London', flanked by a relief moulded dolphin on each side, above a 12" dial with pierced and moulded foliate spandrels, subsidiary dial for seconds, date aperture and Roman numerals and Arabic 5 minute markers, over a long trunk door decorated and relief moulded with figures and a building over a swan, the base with a chinoiserie panel, raised on a plinth, the 8-day movement with anchor escapement and 4 pillars, striking on a bell, with two weights, pendulum, key and a winder, 216cm high (8)A John Smart is listed as working from 1674-1682 and as being apprenticed to J.Johnson on the third of August 1674. He was given freedom of the Clockmaker's Company on the 29th of September 1682.Frederick James Britten, Britten's Old Clocks and Watches, 9th edition, page 603.Restorations, including lacquer and paint decoration. Case later than dial/movement. Arch on dial possibly later, as in two distinct sections, although done a very long time ago - from consistency of patina and braces etc used probably 18thC. Silvering on chapter ring and boss worn. Hands later.Minor chips, dents and scratches consistent with age and use. Some bubbling on lacquerwork, especially whole of left side of trunk.Operational in vendor's home, but told that careful balancing of clock needed.

A Regency style mahogany glazed display cabinet, the ogee cornice with key moulding above a plain frieze, the twin astragal glazed doors opening to five adjustable glass shelves, the base with twin cupboard doors having gadrooned mouldings, opening to a single shelf, raised on bracket feet, 81cm wide x 33cm deep x 223cm high.Generally good with minor cosmetic marks consistent with age and use.  Small crack to lower left large glazing pane.  Left cabinet door slightly warped.  No evidence of worm.

A George III and later oak livery cupboard, the dentil cavetto cornice above twin panelled doors opening to a plain interior, above a series of five short and one long drawers, raised on bracket feet, 133cm wide x 55cm deep x 183.5cm high.Good colour and figuring throughout with well matched timbers.  Construction appears to utilise elements from the George III period with more recent adaptations and reconstructions.  Generally fair condition with some splits to the side panels, evidence of old worm to some of the older interior timbers. Hole cut inside to back left corner of the upper section base boards. Hinges  and door/drawer furniture are later replacements.  Very minor cosmetic marks in places.

Lot 654

Two period oak internal doors, 17th and 18th centuries, of typical panelled construction, 70x172cm and 76x174cm. (2)Both have iron hinges but are lacking any other hardware: locks/handles.  The smaller example is painted white to one side and has some shrinkage to the panel joints.  General wear and signs of age and use throughout.  No evidence of worm.The larger also has shrinkage to panel joints and general signs of age and use throughout including some filler to the centre rail suggesting the door was turned at some point. No evidence of worm.

A George III mahogany linen press, converted to a wardrobe, the upper section with beaded 'razor blade' panels, enclosing oval flame-figured panels, lacking slides and alterations, some damage, 127cm wide x 61cm deep x 188cm highLacking slides and top drawers of base now not functioning i.e.now dummy drawers, as top of base has been knocked-through to add the necessary height for a wardrobe. This is a shame as the carcase is mahogany and this piece is well figured and of a nice colour...Chips, dents, gouges and scratches consistent with age and use.Restorations, including patches, including several on base of right side of upper section and 20cm x 3cm on upper wall-side of right side of upper section. Re-stuck section around hinge of right door on right side. Right door with 25cm x 2cm replacement section lower right and 37cm section re-stuck along upper right, alongside hinge. Later central vertical door edge bead. Upper front edge of cornice later.

A George III mahogany press cupboard converted to wardrobe, the ogee cornice above twin panelled doors opening to a plain interior with later brass rail, the lower section with two short over two long cock-beaded drawers having replacement brass handles, raised on a shaped apron base, 123cm wide x 56cm deep x 200cm high.Cosmetic marks in places, especially to the sides.  Small section of moulding to the right door edge loose.  A few small veneer patches to the lower section.  Small veneer loss to the left front stile.  Veneers to cabinet door panels bowing out a little on both.  All drawer handles are later replacements.

Damage, including gouges and dents and scratches (top and sides particularly). Base lacking return bead on left side and other beads, top and bottom, badly chipped. Door lacking upper horizontal bead and drawers lacking some handles and some damaged, including horizontal cracks.

A Victorian German walnut cased eight day twin-weight Vienna wall clock, the shaped pediment mounted with a rearing horse finial above glazed arched door, the white enamelled dial and chapter ring set with Roman numerals, the brass twin fusee movement stamped to the reverse 'R G' within an anchor and ship's wheel motif with eagle finial, further inscribed '253356', striking on a gong, with subsidiary second hand marked with Arabic numerals, flanked by a pair of reeded pilasters above a shaped base, height 124cm. A contemporary mahogany freestanding glazed corner cabinet of narrow proportions, the moulded cornice above a single bowed glazed door enclosing six shelves, the interior and the shelves upholstered in a maroon fabric, raised on bracket feet, 204 x 45 x 32cm (af). CONDITION REPORT The upper right hand corner of the door has a splint missing and is quite noticeable, as it is showing a paler timber below. Further scuff, scrapes, etc visible throughout - most notably to the stepped base and bracket feet.
