Rare and unusual - Brewster & Ingrahams - American Steeple clock c1850, with mahogany veneer on a pine case, two train striking movement striking the hours on a coiled gong, with original trade label pasted in the rear of the case, dial painted with Roman numerals, makers name, minute track and steel spade hands, fully glazed door with original opaque etched glass tablet and visible pendulum. Brewster and Ingrahams were one of the earlier American clockmaking companies, forming a partnership in 1843. Brewster and Ingrahams early shelf clocks were fitted with patent brass springs. This clock is a good and rare example and retains its original brass springs. 1822 Large part letter to Scotland endorsed "Soldiers Letter, from J. Kilby, Serjt of the Establishment" and countersigned, prepaid at the 1d soldiers rate, but charged upon arrival (variously rated 1/-, 1/6, 1/10, 1/11½) with boxed "India Letter Deal" and "Missent to Glasgow", the reverse with fine red circular "MADRAS / PAID / 1D / SOLDIERS LETTER" datestamp (Jan. 18, Hammond Giles SD9) and arrival handstamps. Sent by Mary McBain to her father, who writes "When you write direct as follows: To Serjeant John Kilby employed in the Commissary General's Dept. Madras, as he is my childs Godfather and he lives next door to the G.P.O - it is him that got this letter sent off for me". Overall soiling and staining, mainly to the address panel with repairs to folds, but a very presentable example of the rare Soldiers Letter datestamp on the reverse. Photo on Page 108.
