Lot 1497

A Victorian mahogany cylindrical pot cupboard, with marble top and octagonal base, diameter 39 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cupboard has a hinged lift up top. As the underside of the top is polished we believe this to be original. The cupboard door is however non-functioning as there is a brass plate to the top edge of each side of the cupboard door which does not allow the door to open. This could probably be removed and the door would function as normal. The condition of the cabinet is reasonable. The marble is not cracked. The immediate surround to the marble is in good order. The stepped surround has slight movement at the joints, this is more evident from the underside. The sides of the piece are all a little discoloured and there is one large stress fracture to the timber on the rear rib. The base has numerous small veneer losses and pieces of veneer missing particularly along the bottom edge. The piece is structurally sound and there is no evidence of any woodworm.

The large wardrobe in particular has scuffs to the polish particularly around the right-hand foot and right-hand return moulding. The chest of drawers has a plate glass top and the top is in good order. All drawer fronts are in generally good condition with only minor scuffs to the cockbeading particularly on the lower drawers. The dressing table has three part missing handles. One bedside cabinet has water damage to the top polish. The veneers are not lifting but some of the polish has been lost. The shelf below this is also water damaged and there are some splashes on the door. The Second cabinet is in better condition.

Lot 1822

An antique oak dresser base, with moulded edge above a series of drawers with cushioned fronts and brass drop handles and with three panelled cupboards beneath, all raised on bracket feet. Width 187 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cupboards have the original base boards but do not have any shelves. It does not look as if there were shelves originally. There are however later shelf supports half way up the side of each interior panel that have clearly been shelf supports. We do not however have the shelves themselves. Depth 55 cm, height 87 cm, width 189 cm. The dresser is extremely heavy and in very good structural order. The top is manufactured from two pieces of oak and there is a shrinkage gap between the two boards. There is however no movement. The top has very few significant marks or any damage to speak of. There is a loss to the very rear right-hand corner of the rear plank above the applied edge moulding. The sides are panelled and there are no splits to the panels. The drawer fronts do not appear to have any repairs or timber losses. The handles do have age but are probably not original. They go through the original handle holes. The lock escutcheons are clearly old but again unlikely to be original. All drawers have locks. We have no keys. All doors have movement at the hinges and need to be slightly lifted to close. The right-hand door has a partially missing handle. The plinth base moulding is in good condition all round. The front feet brackets are a little scuffed and knocked but have no significant problems. The backboards and floorboards are original and in generally good order with only one minor loss to the left-hand panel of the floor to the centre cupboard. The right-hand cupboard door left panel has a stress fracture. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
