Property of a gentleman living in central London; formerly with William Deregibus, acquired by decent; previously in the private collection of Mr & Mrs (Cleo & Diana) Deregibus, New York, USA, acquired in the 1950s; accompanied by an archaeological report by military expert Dr. Raffaele D'Amato; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10401-170145. There are various examples of appliqués used for furniture, carts and ships in the form of a lion’s face, finely cast in high relief, holding a ribbed ring in its gaping jaws, often incised whiskers and fur, and radiating mane. The lion was symbol of power and ferocity, and would also have recalled the fierce gladiatorial fights. One of the most beautiful and striking examples are the lion heads of the famous Nemi ships of Caligula. These were fitted to the ends of cantilevered beams that supported each rowing position on the second ship. [2] Very fine condition.

Lot 161

A George IV mahogany breakfront wardrobe attributed to GillowsCirca 1825, the ovolo moulded cornice above a central pair of doors comprising a pair of panels over two short and two long dummy drawers, enclosing a brass hanging rail and an adjustable shelf, flanked to each end by a twin panelled door enclosing a brass hanging rail, on eight turned bun feet, with rosewood handles, 199cm wide x 65cm deep x 221cm high, (78in wide x 25 1/2in deep x 87in high)Footnotes:Two closely comparable wardrobes to the present lot were made by Gillows during the period 1820-1835 and both feature in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol II, 2008, Woodbridge, pp.'s 67-69, pl.'s 614 & 615. The first was supplied by the Gillow firm to Charles Herbert Pierrepoint, 2nd Earl Manvers, in 1822 for Thoresby Hall, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. Susan Stuart notes that, due to the relative plainness of this example added to the fact it appears under the heading 'Late Family Bedroom' in the 1822 invoice addressed to Earl Manvers, it was evidently intended for use by someone of lesser status than the Earl's family. Thus, in quotation from Idem, p. 67, Stuart concludes: 'It is just the sort of wardrobe which would have originally graced a judge's bedchamber, which it now occupies in the Judges' Lodgings Museum, Lancaster.'The second wardrobe, which is constructed (as with the offered model) from beautiful mahogany timber of superb quality, was most likely executed by Gillows between 1820 and 1835. However unlike the present version, this is stamped: 'Gillows Lancaster and was probably originally purchased or commissioned by the Spedding family. This is evidently the case since it currently resides at Mirehouse, Buttermere, near Keswick in Cumbria after its re-location from Winter Brow, both of which are Spedding properties Idem, p. 68. Despite all having very similar exterior configurations, perhaps the most interesting difference between these related examples and the above is that the former employs actual drawers to the lower part of the central bay while on the latter there are dummy drawers forming the lower part of the main doors. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Harvey Antiques, Witney, Oxfordshire. Another comparable desk, albeit one with historic provenance to Hotspur of London back in 1945, sold Christie's, London, 25 November 2004, Important English Furniture, lot 11. A further similar model was previously with Rolleston Antiques, Kensington. The radiating oyster veneering on the offered lot relates to that on the aforementioned desks as well as on a kingwood escritoire inscribed: 'Mr Thomas Pistor, Ludgate Hill, London', formerly housed at Buxted Park, East Sussex. This escritoire is visible in a photograph of the drawing room at Buxted Park that formed part of a 1950 article in Country Life magazine. Such oyster veneering is also the dominant characteristic on a kingwood escritoire attributed to Thomas Pistor which sold Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 18 March 2020, lot 355. Interesting by way of comparison is an equally remarkable cabinet on chest, also with W.R. Harvey Antiques. LiteratureC. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, Leeds, p. 44. Country Life, 11 August, 1950.D.
