Y A REGENCY GONCALO ALVES AND PARCEL GILT SIDE CABINETIN THE MANNER OF HENRY HOLLAND, CIRCA 1800ALMOST CERTAINLY BY MARSH & TATHAMapproximately 84cm high, 204cm wide, 53cm deepThis fine bookcase is characteristic of the work of Henry Holland, architect to the Prince of Wales, later George IV, having particularly marked affinities with a pair of chiffoniers in the Whitbread collection at Southill Park, Bedfordshire. These were originally supplied under Holland's direction to the great 18th century brewer Samuel Whitbread, circa 1796-1800, illustrated in M. Jourdain and R. Edwards, Regency Furniture 1795-1830, rev. ed., 1965, p. 17, fig. 5 and F. Watson, Southill: A Regency House,1951, fig. 36.Henry Holland was the Prince Regent's architect from the late 1780s, and worked at both the Brighton Pavilion and Carlton House. He was an authority on contemporary French design and decoration, an influence which he employed with great success in the interiors of Carlton House, integrating colours and styles to form complete interiors such as the Flesh Coloured Room or Rose Satin Drawing Room.In association with the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre, Holland purchased French Neoclassical furniture for the Prince Regent by makers such as Weisweiler, Jacob and Hervé, and it is from these sources, rather than his British contemporaries, that Holland's own furniture designs derive. Comparable furniture from Southhill, Bedfordshire, Holland's most complete surviving interior, is illustrated in Frances Collard, Regency Furniture, 1985, pp. 38-43.Holland employed most of the major cabinet-making firms of the day in one or another of his projects - notably Morel, Marsh, Tatham, Mayhew and Ince, and Bailey and Saunders - and exerted considerable influence on a whole generation of British designers. Thomas Sheraton's pattern book The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book,1793 includes two illustrations of the Chinese Drawing Room at Carlton House. Related cabinets attributed to Holland were sold, Sotheby's New York, The Arthingworth Collection, Dec 12th 1996 lot 230 ($65,000) and another, Sotheby's New York 18th October 2014, The Kentshire Collection, Lot 87 ($81,250).  Please note, in the printed catalogue, the attribution, estimate and footnote for this lot has been transposed with that of lot 231. The pendulum should have to the top a small half round end, this is missing so we have been unable to ascertain if the clock does operate. When the hands are manually advanced the movement does strike. The hood is in generally good order. There are no lifting sections of boulle marquetry to the front. There is some minor lifting of the brasswork to both sides but there do not appear to be any brasswork losses. The lacquer to the front of the case is beginning to perish in places. This would easily remove. The boulle work to the door and base appears to be in generally very good order with no significant lifting or losses. Th same comments apply to the side panels which again have very minimal brass lifting and no losses that we can see. All metalwork is present but does not have the original finish. The case is structurally very sound and we can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1100

An early 19th century Scottish inlaid mahogany cased longcase clock, with two train striking movement and circular dial, the case with long trunk door and fluted column corners. Height including brass finial 218 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally good original unrestored condition. There are some minor veneer losses in places and some scuffs around the extremities of the base but no major issues with the case. We have the pendulum and weights. The pendulum bob is however detached from the pendulum itself. The movement winds on both trains and seems to operate when weight is applied to both the going and strike trains. The dial is in generally good order with only minor marks and scratches. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. The glass to the hood door is cracked.

A 19th century rosewood bookcase, with detachable moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals, the base fitted with a pair of panelled cupboard doors raised on a plinth. Height 119 cm, width 140 cm, depth 37 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase is in generally good order. The cornice is in good order all round. There is slight rippling to the veneers in places but no losses and no loose sections. The sides of the top and base are both in very good order and of good colour. The doors are not warped. There is one pane of arched glass missing to the left-hand door, all other glass panes are in good order. The lock is present and we have the key. There is some crossbanding missing to the right-hand side of the upper edge of the lower section which is visible on our image. The base doors are in generally good order. There are minor veneer losses to the centre edging strip of the right-hand door. The right -hand door is also slightly warped although does close and lock into the left one. The plinth base has some veneer losses but no significant issues. The backboards are original. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1234

A George III mahogany longcase clock by John Smith Chester, with brass dial and two train striking movement, the trunk with fluted quarter column corners. Height 195 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock is in fairly good unrestored condition. The hood is in generally good condition, the only exception being losses to the giltwood and gesso at the top and bottoms of the capitals and some evidence of old woodworm in these areas of soft wood. The glass appears to be original. The mask around the dial fits as it should. The brass dial has clearly lost the majority of its silvering. The trunk door is not warped but does have some surface marks and scratches. The quarter columns are in good condition but generally dirty. The sides of the case again are in generally good structural order with no significant splits. The same comments apply to the sides of the base. The base front board has small sections of crossbanding missing around the edges. The original oak rear boards have some evidence of old long gone woodworm. The movement is extremely dirty but when pressure is applied to the going train the movement appears to operate. The same comment applies to the strike train. We have a key but no weights or pendulum. Having removed the hood, the top board which would sit beneath the cornice is missing which probably explains the dust and dirt on the movement. We do not think that the clock is a marriage.

The rear panel which is also mahogany has a full width stress fracture. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
