'…all there is to see is a groggy old skeleton…' SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. A.L.S., G. Bernard Shaw, one page, 4to, Ayot Saint Lawrence, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, 3rd January 1950, to Mr. Grimwood. Shaw sends his correspondent a vivisection book (no longer present) for Stanley Dollar and continues 'As to the robe I cannot ask you to come to this inaccessible village until after Easter. Car from door to door is the only tolerable transit. I am never free until after 4, when the lanes are dark and dangerous, and in fog impossible. Even in summer it takes three hours out of the day: too much for a busy man. And all there is to see is a groggy old skeleton (93 ½) who was G. B. S. some twenty years ago.' He concludes 'Why not send the robe by parcel post, and choose your own time later on, if you would like to see the animal'. A 1930's Oak two door sectional large Wardrobe, having moulded and carved cornice over central bevel plated mirror, flanked either side by three panel doors with applied geometric moulding to the top panels, the lower pairs of panels having moulded edges, over pair side by side shoe drawers with iron drop handles, standing on ball feet. 65'' wide x 78 1/2'' high x 21 3/4'' deep.

A good Victorian Mahogany triple door Wardrobe, having moulded cornice with applied moulded frieze, central full length mirrored door flanked by double two panel doors with long upper panels, all panels having applied moulded detail to the corners. The left and middle doors revealing full length hanging space with top rail and lower shoe rack, the right door opening to reveal four shelves and lower drawer with brass handles. Standing on plinth base. 75 1/2'' wide x 82'' high x 20 1/2'' deep
A good Georgian Mahogany serpentine Sideboard, having shaped well figured top over wide central Oak lined frieze drawer, to the left is a cupboard door with false drawer front, the right is a deep drawer with similar front, lined with zinc and with central 'X' for separating bottles, brass plate ring handles and escutcheons, standing on six square tapering legs terminating in spade feet, 64 3/4'' x 36'' high x 27'' deep
A walnut and marquetry inlaid longcase clock, profusely decorate with foliage and birds, having bullseye panel to door. The brass dial bearing Roman numerals and the makers name John Marshall of London, 215cm (incomplete works). Condition Report: -1 of 2 weights missing, plus pendulum. -Rubbing on gilt, some veneer missing on case, damage to hood. -Restoration needed! -11" dial, case will only take an 11" dial.
An interesting early carriage clock with alarm, machined silvered dial, pierced Brequet type moon hands, concentric alarm hand, the three trains and alarm hand setting through the dial, movement with countwheel striking and lever platform, in a case with fluted columns, handle and bands, the glazed top sliding to allow front door and shuttered back to be lifted, on bun feet, c. 1840, 6in (15cm) high, with original travelling case. A very rare red Japanned striking tavern clock with signed and dated movement, the black painted circular dial with gilt Roman hours and outer Arabic minute ring signed Jos. Morton, Aberford, the four pillar movement signed J. Morton 1764 on the front plate, grooved barrels, brass pierced hands with counterbalanced minute, the case decorated with gilt chinnoserie designs against a red ground, the trunk door with ships and islands with a kite flier in the foreground, fretted ears and moulded ogee base, dial 31in (79cm) diameter, 65in (165cm) high. Joseph Morton is recorded by Loomes, B. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Vol. II as being born circa 1724 and dying in 1774. Clidsdale, Edinburgh, the movement with anchor escapement, weight driven movement with pendulum, the large circular dial with brass hands, in lacquered case, the waist door painted with a risque fishing scene. A 19th Century Anglo-Indian cabinet with applied scrolling acanthus decoration to stag's head mounted cornice over two cabinet doors enclosing a lined interior with three shelves on a base with two further cabinet doors on bun feet (Provenance: Bought at a house sale near North Berwick in 1920's), 100 cm wide CONDITION REPORTS 198 cm high. Wood is coromandel . Top section comes into seven pieces, some small holes to top, chip to top left corner, all over minor scratches, small chips and losses, top of lower section large split down left-hand side, top section right-hand side small split down first panel, possibly two different types of wood, small split to base top left corner, crack to glass top right door, general wear and tear. Height 216cm including cornice.
