Lot 1787

A Victorian mahogany cylindrical pot cupboard, with marble top and plinth base. Diameter 38 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is in generally good condition. The marble is not cracked. The surround is in good order with only minor old marks and blemishes. The door is not warped and is in generally good condition. It has slightly shrunk and when closed there is a gap between the door and the carcass which is fairly typical. The handle operates as it should as does the catch. The plinth base has minor scuffs and marks but no significant issues.

Lot 1803

A 19th century oak hanging corner cupboard, with moulded cornice above a panelled door enclosing shaped shelves. Width 75 cm.

Lot 1983

A Victorian walnut credenza, with ebonised moulded edge above a centre panelled door flanked by glazed cupboard doors and shelves and all raised on a plinth base with short turned feet, width 149 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Width 149 cm, depth 37.5 cm, height 105 cm. The credenza is in generally very good condition. The top is flat with no lifting veneers. There are some minor surface scratches and marks but no significant problems. The centre door is not warped. The lock is present and we have the key which does open both side doors. The centre door we cannot open at present however this should not be problematic. The side doors are not warped and close as they should. The cloth lining to the shelves is discoloured and worn in places. There are some very minor veneer nibbles in places but again no significant issues. The plinth base is raised on original black painted turned legs which again has served to preserve the plinth. The backboards are original. There is no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1338

A pair of Victorian single fusee wall clocks, both from the Gillette & Co factory in Croydon, each in pine case. Case diameter 45.5 cm, height 80 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case without the VR marking on the face is in generally very good order with only minor nibbling around the two lock holes. The movement is fully wound but is ticking without the pendulum in place. We have the pendulum. The rear of the movement is stamped "Gillett & Co., Clock Factory, Croydon, London, 10625". The brass bezel is in generally good order but does have one small section of repair to the bottom below numeral 6. The retaining clasp holding the door closed may not be working correctly. The face itself is a little dirty and has numerous small scratches. The second clock case is in slightly less good condition. There is a loss around the lock area and small nibbles round the lock escutcheon to the glazed door. The face as you will see has lifting and bubbling paint with significant losses. The movement winds and is again ticking away. It is numbered "10623".

Lot 1693

A George III mahogany kneehole desk, with moulded edge above a series of drawers and recessed kneehole cupboard and all raised on bracket feet. Width 89 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are two small old veneer repairs to the right-hand side. The applied edge moulding has a small old repair to the rear of the left return. All drawer fronts are in generally good order. The bottom left-hand drawer has a small loss to the cockbeading at the bottom left hand corner. The bottom right-hand drawer has a knock to the left hand cockbead. The recessed cupboard door is not warped. The base moulding has the usual scuffs and marks particularly around the kneehole. The bracket feet are sound and there is no movement. The backboards are in good order. The top drawer lock is present but we have no key. The handles appear to be original, if not they go through the original handle holes.

Lot 1970

A George III mahogany longcase clock, by Thomas Twigg, Shelton, with eight day movement, the case with swans neck pediment, long trunk door and fluted quarter column corners, height 229 cm.

Lot 1992

A Victorian mahogany bookcase on cupboard, with moulded detachable cornice above a glazed door, the base with drawer above a panelled cupboard door and all raised on a plinth, width across waist 85.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cornice is in good condition all around. The polish to the crossbanded frieze is a little dry in places. The right-hand side of the top is in good condition. The left-hand side has some scratches caused presumably by transportation. These have disturbed the polished finish. The door is not warped. The lock is present but we do not have the key. The base top shelf is in good condition as is the drawer front. The lock is present. We have no keys. The door is not warped. The left-hand side has some scratches and scuffs to the polish but no cracks. The right-hand side is in good order also. The plinth base has some minor nibbles to the veneers but no significant issues.

Lot 1984

A Titchmarsh & Goodwin style standing oak corner cupboard, with arched upper door, width 77 cm.

Lot 1465

A wooden door, decorated with book spines. 180 cm x 82 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The door is a 19th century door traditionally panelled on the side opposite the book spines. Judging by the age of the spines and the fixings we think that the book spines are contemporary with the door itself which may well have been a library door. There is a hinged panel which would have revealed the lock and door handle.

Lot 1889

A large Regency mahogany secretaire desk, with moulded edge above a long secretaire drawer, with recessed centre cupboard below flanked on either side by drawers all with brass drop handles with lion mask backplates. Width 128 cm, height 120 cm, depth 53 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The desk top is flat with no cracks and minimal surface damage. The colour is good. The moulded edge is in generally good condition all round. The front left-hand corner has an old circular dowel which almost looks original but is probably not. The colour is an exact match. It probably covers a screw or peg attaching the top to the base. The left-hand handle is missing its circular drop. The fall front operates as it should and all brassware is original. The interior surface is plan mahogany with no baize or leather. All pigeonholes and drawers are present and there is only very minor cosmetic issues to the interior. All six pedestal drawers are in good condition with no losses to the cockbeading. All handles are present but are likely to be later replacements as there is evidence of a knob handle behind each lion mask backplate. The cupboard door is not warped. It closes as it should. The lock escutcheon is missing and we have no key. The brass knob handle is later. The interior shelf is original. The sides of the desk are in good condition with only very minor veneer fractures. The plinth base is in good condition all round.

A George III longcase clock, mahogany, with eight day striking movement by Lott Barwise, Cockermouth, with swans neck pediment, arched glazed door, 13 inch dial, long trunk door, quarter column corners and raised on bracket feet. Height 90 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in extremely good overall condition. There are some minor stress fractures to the veneers between the swans necks pediments but these are minimal and not problematic. There is likely to have been a gilt wheatsheaf or something of that nature between the pediments. This is missing. The hood door is not warped and the glass is original. The trunk door has a very slight warp which is not visible when viewed from the front only from a side angle. The top of the door is proud of the case when closed by approximately 1/2 cm. This tapers to nothing by the time it is parallel with the lock. The lock operates, we have the key. There are minor stress fractures again to the door veneers and base panel veneers. The sides of the case are in good condition all around. The bracket feet which are original are also in good order. The mask around the dial fits very well. The dial itself is as you see in our image. There is some minor overpainting to the small Arabic numerals on the date ring and also to the lettering. The seatboard is clearly original. Whilst the clock cheeks are not of traditional construction it may still be that the case and movement are original to each other. The clock case is clearly of local manufacture (probably Whitehaven). It is contemporary with the dial and movement and has come in from a local private source. We have two weights and the pendulum. The cat gut to the strike train is broken. The clock does however tick. The movement is very dirty but appears to be all present.
