SPENCER HERBERT: (1820-1903) English Philosopher & Biologist. Brief A.L.S., Herbert Spencer, on one side of a postcard, Pewsey, Wiltshire, 25th July 1889, to Harrison at The London Library. Spencer requests to be sent a copy of History of Astronomy in the Nineteenth Century by Miss. Clerke. Hand addressed by Spencer to the verso. Some overall age wear and light water staining, just affecting the text, and with a heavy postal cancellation affecting the first four letters of the signature. Together with an 8vo sheet bearing a holograph D.S. by William Whewell (1794-1866) English Polymath & Scientist; admitting two to an abbey via the west cloisters door, 22nd June 1862, and an ink signature ('J. K.', initials only) by John Kidd (1775-1851) English Physician, Chemist & Geologist; on a piece removed from the conclusion of a letter addressed in his hand to Archdeacon Clarke, 1837. Neatly laid down alongside each other. FR to G, 2. £80-100. Agnes Mary Clerke (1842-1907) Irish Astronomer and Writer whose work A Popular History of Astronomy during the Nineteenth Century was first published in 1885.
BRUNE GUILLAUME MARIE ANNE: (1763-1815) Marshal of France. A.L.S., Brune, one page, 8vo, Paris, 29th October 1802, to the maritime Prefect of Brest, in French. On a letter bearing the printed heading "French Republic, General Brune, Counselor of State, Ambassador of the French Republic to the Sublime Door" Brune kindly asks his correspondent to attend his request and states `I beg you to kindly grant to this young man, whose family has been very unfortunate during the revolution, a ticket to go to the Martinique, because he deserves your benevolence´. A good autograph letter by Brune who, at the time of the present letter, had recently been appointed by Napoleon ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, and who iniciated relationships between France and Persia. Small creasing and some overall age wear, otherwise VG. £200-300
A RARE CAST IRON TELEPHONE BOX CIRCA 1920, made by Carron Ironworks of Falkirk, in the neo-classical style, with single door and cross bar windows, bearing cast wreaths to the roof apex ends, H 270 cm, W 195 cm, D 135 cm Note - The Carron Company was an ironworks established in 1759 on the banks of the river Carron near Falkirk in Stirlingshire. After initial problems, the company was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. The company prospered through it's development and production of a new short-range and short barrelled naval cannon the carronade. The company was one of the largest ironworks in Europe through the 19th century.
