Entirely covered in black roiro lacquer and finely decorated in iro-e takamaki-e, subtle textures, and fine inlay of glass, ceramic, shell, horn, and hardstone with treasures including a Tang-style foliate-rimmed bronze mirror with ho-o (phoenix) decoration tied with a red-lacquered tasseled rope as well as rings, jewels, and shells. A PAIR OF LARGE CHINESE PAINTED POTTERY DOOR TILES -MING DYNASTY OR LATER. These large and impressive pottery tiles, in the form of a pair of doors, are each decorated in high relief with Menshen; door gods or door spirits who protect homes from evil spirits. They have been 'cold painted' with various coloured pigments, good traces of which still remain. Height 62cm width 33cm depth approx. 14cm. Ming Dynasty (AD 1368 - 1644) or later. Provenance: from a Sussex collection.
