Russian school, XVIII-XIX centuries."Portable Iconostasis of five levels".Tempera, gold leaf on board.Measurements: 43 x 120 cm. 51 x 128 cm (frame).Iconostasis as a religious object is one of the most important phenomena of Russian medieval culture. The iconostasis of the XV-XVI century can be divided into four types according to the number of levels, or rows it has, from two to five levels. Also reaching its full development by the 16th century with five rows. There are iconostases both for public use, in churches, and for domestic use, as is the case of the present lot. In their structure they are practically the same as the ecclesiastical iconostases, undergoing slight changes that are linked, above all, to the convenience of use.The reading of any iconostasis starts from the bottom up. The lower level is called local. In the case of the lot of interest, it is imitating the structure of an ecclesiastical iconostasis, since it has a door, called "sacred", central. It lacks any functional use, but serves to respect the structure. It is decorated with six miniatures, of annunciation, and below this scene appear the miniatures of the four evangelists. On both sides of the door rest the representations of the Virgin and St. John the Baptist, archangels Michael and Gabriel, and other local saints. Unlike the fixed iconostasis, this one lacks the south and north doors, located at both ends of the iconostasis. The second row is called "the festive level".In it are located the important celebrations of the Gospel. It usually contains the images of the Crucifixion, Resurrection, Descent into Hell, The Passion of Christ, The Last Supper. In the case of this image, scenes of Marian themes can be appreciated. In the fourth row rests the level of Deésis. It is the most important level of the whole iconostasis from which its construction really begins. Deésis from the Greek means prayer. In the center of this level is always Jesus Christ, different versions are admitted. In the case of the iconostasis that concerns us, the author opts for an unusual composition. In the central register of the iconostasis, just above the fictitious door appears a triple representation of the Christ in the form of the Last Supper, and above this miniature, there is the Crucifixion and the miniature of the Deesis in a single image, unlike the traditional structure, when the Virgin, Jesus Christ and St. John the Baptist, the three protagonists of the scene, are represented in individual icons, in the form of a triptych. On the two sides of the third and fourth levels are miniatures of various saints, apostles and prophets. The iconostasis culminates with the fifth level that belongs to the antediluvian Patriarchs. They are the characters of the Old Testament, the ancestors of Christ, including the first humans, Adam, Eve and Abel. This iconostasis is a religious work of very high level, both at the compositional and chromatic level, as well as at the iconographic level.

(2).Footnotes:清嘉慶/道光 黑漆描金「十八羅漢圖」立櫃一對The present lot is unusual both in its technique of gilt-lacquering and also the Buddhist motif of luohans. The slightly raised gold technique, was inspired a Japanese technique known as takamaki-e; see for example, a black and gilt lacquer casket with this raised technique, Japan 1630s, illustrated in Encounters: The Meeting of Asia and Europe 1500-1800, London, 2004, p.238. This 'foreign style' technique became popular during the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor, who especially appreciated and collected Japanese-style gold and silvered lacquer (maki-e), renowned for its use of extensive amounts of gold. The gold-lacquer style continued into the Qing dynasty. See for example, a handled case with gold-painted landscape in the same raised technique, in imitation of a Japanese case, mid Qing dynasty, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, p.192, no.144.The Buddhist motif of luohans also implies that these cabinets were not made for export, but catered for Chinese taste. The motif of luohans was particularly popular at the Imperial Court, where the Qianlong Emperor had a zitan and lacquer screen with sixteen panels with luohans; see N.Berliner, The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, New Haven and London, 2010, pp.165-172.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. The style of the model – individual hull planking fixed with small trenails to a wooden core – and the form of the vessel represented here compare very favourably to the model yacht Chatham, also 1741 and to the same scale 1:32 – possibly by the same hand – retained at the National Collection Greenwich SLR0460. Portsmouth, launched 1703 renamed Old Portsmouth in 1741 with the building of a larger yacht (to be named Portsmouth); Old Portsmouth was then turned over in 1772 to the Governor of the Isle of Wight and renamed Medina, serving for a further fifty years before being broken up in 1832 after 129 years of service. It is possible that this model represents one of the refits post-1741 or 1772.Condition report: This model was discovered about 20 years ago in the Portsmouth area in a distressed but largely complete condition, elements that have been replaced include figurehead, part of the companionway, belfry, cutaway mast and bowsprit, tiller and some small elements of the stern carving including a suggested coat of arms based on historical research, the lined paper decks are later, however underneath the bow section, remnants of a chequerboard design, also laid to paper, survive, one surviving gunport provided a pattern used for the others present; the stand and case are also later
