According to Houbraken, he became blind in 1690 and began to give art lectures which were subsequently published by his sons in two books –Grondlegginge der teekenkonst (Principles of Drawing, 1701) and Het groot schilderboek (The Great Book of Painters, 1707). Reissued in 1712, 1714 and 1716, and translated into English in 1738, the Schilderboek remains a valuable source for seventeenth-century Dutch art.

A 19th century French gilt metal and white marble eight day mantel clock, the enamel dial with Arabic numerals, indistinctly signed Cronier and with movement striking on a bell, with a D-shaped base, height 35cm, with key and pendulum.Additional InformationNo guarantees that the clock is in working order. Dial with a few small nicks around the winding apertures and lightly grubby. The hinge to the door at the back of the movement is lacking pin. General tarnishing to the metal mounts throughout .The clock is 8cm deep.

An early 19th century Scottish mahogany longcase clock, the circular painted dial set with Roman numerals, housing an eight day movement above arched door, with wrythen moulded uprights above a similarly decorated deep plinth base, height 192cm.Additional InformationSome splits to the case, but these are very minor. Sold with pendulum and two weights and a key for the door. Retains a good colour. Some old repairs around the plinth base, the very lower plinth is probably an addition. General surface wear.
