Literature: Granville Gower Loch, The Closing Events of the Campaign in China, London 1843, Chapter XII Porcelain Pagoda, page 181, where Captain Loch describes his visit to the `Porcelain Tower` at Nankin (Nanjing) on the 28th August 1842. `After we had tethered our horses in the courtyard, away from the immense and momentarily increasing crowd, we entered the pagoda by the principal door in front of the flight of steps and found ourselves in an extensive octagonal corridor surrounding the body of the building, which is square and elaborately ornamented with figures of the Budha faith in bas relief - the whole profusely gilt: each story contained a shrine with the universal idol, the sitting figure of ?the Queen of Heavenî. A single door under the niche, in which the principal deity was placed, leads into a square chamber in the shaft of the building, occupied by another image.` The sitting ?Queen of Heavenî figure Loch describes in a shrine on each storey of the Nanjing tower undoubtedly refers to the Queen Mother of the West - Xi Wangmu..
