An early 19th Century mahogany long case clock with extensive Sheraton style inlaid decoration, the hood with swan neck pediment and square side pillars, triple arched door and square reeded side pillars to the trunk on ogee bracket feet with arched painted dial with moon phase to the arch by Jno Bavnish, Rochdale. It is It is quite likely to be in going order, but is not sold as such and may require some attention to movement and case. The weights and pendulum are present. The dial has been repainted. The clock has been cleaned/restored at some time in the last 20-30 years.

The chassis detail including twin outside and twin inside cylinders with Stephenson's valve gear, injector, fluted motion, cab controlled drain cocks, lubricators, whistle, brakes, sanding gear and other usual fittings. The six-wheel tender with fitted hand feed pump, brakes, water cocks, detailed rivet-work, fitted steps, hand irons, lamp irons, lamps, tool boxes, vacuum hoses and couplings. The model finished in Great Western Railways green lined livery with 'Torquay Express' to smoke box door and polished bright-work to motion and other fittings. Length 188cm. Cab width 25cm. A MARQUETRY LONGCASE CLOCK; SIGNED AMBROSE HAWKINS OF WELLS, LATE 17TH CENTURY AND LATER the brass eight day movement with four turned pillars and an anchor escapement striking on a bell, the nine inch brass dial with ebonised Roman numerals and fleur-de-lis markers, the matted centre with a date aperture and with pierced hands, signed 'Ambrose Hawkins de Wells fecit', with winged cherub mask spandrels, the oyster veneered and marquetry panelled case inlaid with flowers and birds, the trunk door with a glass lenticle, with pendulum, two weights and winding key 201.3cm high Provenance The Estate of the late Jane Sumner. Catalogue Note Ambrose Hawkins is one of the earliest West Country clockmakers by whom longcases survive and is well known for the complexity and quality of his movements. He was married in 1688 in Bristol and worked in Wells in Somerset until 1692 when he moved to Exeter. He died as a relatively young man in 1705. A rare grande sonnerie longcase of one month duration by Ambrose Hawkins was sold by Bonhams, Fine Clocks, 10th December 2014, lot 104.
