19th century walnut marquetry and mixed woods bow front credenza, the moulded ebonised and gilt metal beaded top above a central blind panelled inlaid foliate door flanked by two bowed glazed display cabinets, the interior revealing shaped shelves, standing on an ebonised moulded projecting base. 136x42x105cm approx. 18th century oak eight day long case clock marked 'W Parkinson, Lancaster', having arched brass face with silvered chapter ring and dial, rolling moon , seconds dial and date aperture, flat hoot above cross banded arch waist door flanked by quarter pilasters on a panel base. Eight day two train movement, strikes on one bell. The face 36cm high x30cm wide approx. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Complete with two weights and pendulum, probably originally a square dial with added arch, lacks original feet.
Late 18th/early 19th century mahogany long case clock marked 'Robert Hampton, Warrington', having arched brass face with silvered chapter ring, silvered seconds dial and date aperture under a rolling moon with pierced brass spandrels, the case with broken swan neck pediment with reeded pilasters flanking the arched aperture, the waist with strapwork frieze, shaped door and reeded quarter pilasters on a panelled base. Carriage door key. The horn handle of this cane can be removed revealing a square sectioned steel carriage door key. These were used by station masters/controllers to open the doors in on old steam trains. This one is stamped GWR for The Great Western Railway. As late as the 1950s each train carriage had a small separate “room” at the end for the guard to occupy. This was kept locked so was only accessible by a guard carrying a similar key. These later ones had a larger cross section than the early ones as shown here. The stick is ebonized with the original brass/steel ferrule. Narrow silver? band between the handle and shaft.
