A fine Regency mahogany longcase regulator, the brass six-pillar jewelled movement with six-spoke wheelwork, deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets, escape wheel arbor and pallet arbor, and maintaining power, all enclosed by screwed brass dust shutters, the silvered circular dial with subsidiary seconds and hours within the minute ring, inscribed `French, Royal Exchange, London`, the backplate similarly inscribed, above a steel and mercury compensated pendulum and silvered beat plaque, the stepped arch hood carved with leaves, above a relief-carved crowned dragon, its wings outstretched framing the dial, the talons grasping the surmounts of palm stem pilasters, flanking the glazed door, the base carved in high relief with a squatting imp with foliate sleeves and trousers, his arms outstretched above foliate capped masks and a scroll-draped plinth, height approx 201cm. Note: Santiago James Moore French was a renowned maker of fine clocks, pocket and marine chronometers and barometers. He was admitted to the Clockmakers` Company in 1810 and worked from premises at Sweeting`s Alley, Royal Exchange (circa 1808-38) and Cornhill, Royal Exchange (circa 1839-42). Reference: Britten`s Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers. Provenance: the private collection of T.P. Camerer Cuss (1908-70), thence by descent.
