He became a clock maker of note. His grandfather, originally Pierre Archambaud, was a Huguenot refugee who came to London and worked as a staymaker. He maintained an establishment in London in New Street, known by the sign of the Green Man, in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields. The dial is dirty, and has some scratches to the bottom left corner, with pendulum (feather detached but present), one weight, the case is painted and generally in good condition, although with a slight warped front door, knocked on numerous occasions.

An 18th century oak spice cabinet, having a panel door enclosing eight small drawers, on bracket feet, 32.5 cm wide Condition report Report by RB The two plank top has moved slightly, and the sides have shrunk a little, with two carrying handles to the sides, one missing its circular disc, the lock appears to be replaced, and the key does nothing at all, there is no lock plate, some of the drawers have some of the edging missing and the corners, some of the bracket feet sections missing, mostly to the right hand side, hinges weak and damaged. Overall could benefit from some colour.

Lot 681

A carved oak stool, two others, and a bedside table, 38 cm wide (4) Condition report Report by GH The oblong stool with rounded ends Has a large crack down the middle of the board. A very small amount of evidence of old woodworm. Turning the piece over we can see that four screws have been added, probably later, to secure the top to the base and legs. There is also a strengthening block of wood which has been added to the underside. The legs are loose and the joints appear to have begun to come apart. The table overall is dented, well used and patinated with some chips and dents to the bottom of the turned legs. The small stool with the carved top Has dents, scratches, gouges and wear commensurate with age. There is also a split to one corner and crazing to the varnish. One leg has a long split all the way down, revealing one of the joints and revealing that at some point the top has been secured to the base with nails. Otherwise there are dents, scratches, chips and a dark patina commensurate with age and use. Structurally it is still very firm. The last stool with the hole in the top Scratched, chipped and gouged with one of the friezes coming away from the top of the table and also evidence of repairs done with nails and splits near some of the joints. The stool also appears to have been revarnished quite badly. The bedside cupboard Has several burn marks, dents and scratches to the top and small patches of old overpolished woodworm throughout. The bottom drawer handle has come off bust is present and the cupboard handle is loose. Elsewhere there are chips, scratches and gouges commensurate with age. Has been polished over and various small splits, scratches and gouges commensurate with age. The cupboard door handle is quite loose.

An 18th century walnut bureau bookcase, the front veneered in burr walnut, crossbanded and with herringbone banding, the double dome top having a pair or mirrored doors and a pair of candle slides below, the bureau section having a fall front revealing a fitted interior, above four graduated long drawers, on bracket feet, 107 cm wide See illustration Condition report Report by RB The bookcase section: lacks finials, some sections of old repair, slight loss to the left hand dome section as you look at it, the mirror panels are mist probably later, as are the backings in the door, it has been rehinged and repaired, the interior is plain and lacks any shelves. The base: the fall front reveals a fitted interior with pigeon holes and drawers, a couple of patches of repair and general ink staining, and with a modernish leather inset, and is slightly warped, it has had numerous sets of handles, and the bracket feet are later/rebuilt. Does separate into two pieces. 100 cm wide 225 cm high Bookcase section 30 cm deep Bureau section 57 cm deep Bureau section alone 110 cm high Bookcase section alone 113 cm Overall: It has clearly had quite a bit of work done to it over the years, and whilst attractive from the front (although needing restoration and repolishing) the sides are not as good

A George III style mahogany breakfront library bookcase, the moulded cornice above a fluted frieze, with two pairs of bar glazed doors below, the base section having a secretaire drawer, four small drawers, and two pairs of panel doors, 164 cm wide See illustration Condition report Report by RB 206 cm high. Not a modern production, probably 100 years old or so. Some of the glaze putty is missing to the inside of the panel doors, adjustable shelves, no key escutcheons to the centre and left doors, small corner missing to left hand door on the breakfront, the centre secretaire drawer has some staining to the leather inset panel, and is lacking the left hand brass button release fitting and lock, small area of moulding missing to left hand central panel door and bottom right hand panel door lacking key escutcheon. Overall in a market fresh condition which would now benefit from a bit of a clean and a wipe over. Good quality. .

A large 19th Century lions mask door knocker Naturalistically modelled face with a substantial loop knocker with a central baluster and reel joint. 23cms (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: The lions mask showing oxidization of the metal and polish infilled in recessed areas, traces of old paint around the fringe, wear part of the compressed oval which would slam against the door, also traces of old polish ingrained in recesses.

CONDITION REPORT: The outer case in good condition, glazed panels not broken, hinges tight the Fortin some oxidization to the ring handle and the white metal top and support beneath the inscription Griffin & George Ltd, some oxidization and scratching generally to the black outer cased paint, minor mercury infill with key to cabinet.

A good oak and gilt brass bracket clock With a 16cm silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals with slow fast chime silent and chime on eight gongs and chime of four gongs in the arch within a rose and leafy gilt foliate ground, the substantial three train brass cylinder movement stamped W & H Sch for Winterhalder & Hofmeier of Germany striking the hour on a large gong and eight subsidiary gongs with a pull repeat on the hour, the case with an arched moulded top with urn finials above stop fluted and brass inlaid quarter columns, the sides inset with panels applied with gilt metal mounts depicting vases of fruit, scrolls and flowers raised upon a stepped plinth base, lions wined paw feet. 45cms high x35x24.5cms. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2060: brass coated dial good condition, leaf and roses and scrolls bright, minor discolouration to the chapter ring, the usual rubbing around the winding apertures, bevelled glass to door good condition, each hinge solid brass inlay to stop fluted side columns good condition, oak good rich colour, minor scratches to plinth, inset gilt metal panels good condition, back door hinges good, inset panel good, working order but not tried for long duration.

An early 19th Century mahogany dial clock With a convex glazed brass bezel to the convex cream painted metal dial, unsigned, pierced hands, Roman numerals the four pillar single train fusee movement with A shaped brass plates, anchor escapement with a pendulum bob and a later key, the case with a hinged side door, lacking lower door. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2064: the outer brass bezel some signs of discolouration around the border, hinge to door loose, central key missing, original glass, usual enamel chipping around the four fixing screws to border of dial some paint in the process of flaking in the central dial just below twelve o'clock, minor scratching around winding aperture, minor bend to the seconds hand, mahogany case the moulded border minor scratches, lower hinged door lacking, hinges lacking, slither of veneer missing to the lower part of the trunk approximately 2cm x 2cm, a small piece of veneer missing on the right of the trunk by the hinge recess, two wooden plugs missing to hold the dial in place, side hinge door in place hinges loose two screws missing, some veneer to border on hinged door missing, possibly later pendulum and later key.

An early Victorian mahogany drop dial wall timepiece With a metal bezel enclosing a white dial printed "London County Council" with a four pillar single train fusee movement with anchor escapement with rectangular plates, the box case fitted with a turned wood dial above a drop trunk with side door, lacking base drawer, complete with long pendulum. NB: includes an admissions daily issue menu sheet possibly the clock may relate to St Bernard's Hospital, Southall, Middlesex which was the first pauper lunatic asylum built in England. In 1889 the newly formed L.C.C. took over and the asylum was renamed The London County Asylum Hanwell.

A French "Tableaux Comtoise, Oeil de Boeuf" With a 24cm dial signed Chalumeau Mepvans with Roman numerals set within white cartouches, foliate pierced hands with a two train spring driven movement striking on a coiled gong, the shaped painted and ebonised wavy oval frame embracing a frieze inlaid with shaped panels inlaid with Mother of Pearl and silver coloured wire, flowers and leaves. 66x49cms, with pendulum and key. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2067: the hinged door the hinges tight probably the original glass old putty, glass spandrels may have been replaced hinges centre screws missing to glazed door hinges tight, some rubbing to silvered dial, side gilt metal panels possibly metalwork replaced and red backing replaced and inner card replaced.

A late 18th Century ebonised bracket clock With a 20cm arched dial signed Thomas Walter, London on a sunken silvered sector in the matted centre above a calendar aperture, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with pierced blued steel hands, leaf and foliate spandrels, strike silent ring in the arch enclosed foliate mounts, the four pillar movement with twin fusee's, strike on bell with anchor escapement, the back plate engraved with a central urn on a pedestal enclosed within an oval and flanked with trailing flowers, foliate engraved movement securing brackets to the case, the pendulum with adjusting screw, the case with a bell top, fish scale frets to the sides, brass side carrying handles, plain glass spandrels to the front door raised upon a plinth base. 50cms high x 30.5cms x 17.5cms. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: The ebonised case - the bell shape top surface scratching, the hinged door hinges, tight, centre screws missing to right hand hinge, glazed door old putty appears to be the original glass, glass spandrels fixed with pins possibly original, lacking escutcheon, some discolouration to strike silent ring in the arch, pointer possibly not original. gilt leafy applied border to ring good condition, spandrels some minor rubbing, silver chaptering rubbed, hands would appear to be original, some rubbing to silvered name plate and square aperture, gilt metal fretwork sides replaced and red ground behind with card backing replaced, overhead saucer bell possibly replaced, movement now with anchor escapement, signs on the rectangular engraved back plate of circular apertures possibly relating to an earlier verge escapement which would have had a short bob pendulum which now has possible a later pendulum, movement not working, side carrying handles old but possibly added later.

A Victorian oak wall timepiece With a white dial signed Ernest & Clarke, Leeland Road, West Ealing with Roman numerals, blued hands with a gilt painted bezel with a single train spring driven movement, the oak case with a moulded border with hinged side and base doors, lacking pendulum bob. 38.5cms. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2070: the gilt painted metal bezel surface scratching some play to the hinge one screw missing, usual enamel flaking to the dial fixing screws, scratching around the central winding aperture inscription good condition, overall surface scratching, the lower hinged door hinges tight good condition, probably slightly swollen doesn't fit flush, some traces of decorators paint, right hand side hinge door, some wear to hinges, again decorators paint on the side of the case, bob of pendulum missing, the case sound but decorators paint which needs removing.

A gilt metal Pendule d'officier style gilt brass mantle clock early 20th Century With a 10.5cm silvered dial signed in the chapter ring, Finnigans, Arabic numerals, the central roundel engraved with a scale pattern, pierced gilt hands, the two train movement striking on a coiled gong, the rectangular case with a concave sided cresting with an entwined snake handle above pendant laurel leaves, sides applied with a leafy beaded flower head raised upon turned gilt metal feet. 20cms high x 12x8cms, with key (illustrated) *** The clock is modelled on a pendule d'officier. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2074: the gilt brass bezel minor discolouration to bezel, original glass, hinge tight, silvered dial several spots of discolouration, one in between eleven and twelve Arabic numerals and some brown discolouration running in the outer ring just ahead of seven and in front of five, hands bright and good condition, Finnigans and made in France description worn, hardly visible, some discolouration to the leafy lower spandrels, snake handle some discolouration and also to the flower requires cleaning, some verdigris just on the ledge above the applied leaf decoration on the right hand side, dust in filled in to cracks, rear glazed door minor movement to hinge, original glass. The movement - old repair soldered to hammer, not in working order.

A mahogany and brass inlaid wall timepiece With a 30cm white bowfront dial signed T Moreland, Chester with Roman numerals, gilt brass bezel to the bowfront glazed door the single train fusee and chain movement and shouldered footed plates with anchor escapement the well veneered case with an octagonal beaded top each segment inlaid with cut brass leaves and flowers, the trunk inlaid with stars and line inlays with fan shape ears the undercut base similarly inlaid with a hinged door with door key, original winding key and pendulum. 64x41cms. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2078: the brass bezel the glass good condition, the hinge slight movement, the dial minor surface scratching otherwise bright, some enamel chipping around the three fixing screws, minor chip on the outer rim of the dial by five o'clock and just past one o'clock, beaded border good condition brass inlay to frieze good condition, brass inlay to trunk stars intact, brass horizontal strips good condition and roundels the left hand strip of metal possibly replaced, lower hinged door, hinge in good condition with key, complete with pendulum, case sides in good condition, right hand hinged door, one screw missing to top hinge, hinge is tight with original brass catch, movement good condition, running but not run for duration.

A good Victorian gilt brass mounted mahogany chiming table clock, "Dent London" English circa 1880 with a 19cm dial signed on a plaque, Dent, London with Roman and Arabic numerals with blued steel scrolling hands, leaf and shell spandrels and subsidiary dials in the arch for chime/silent, slow fast and chime on eight bells and Westminster, the massive three train fusee and chain movement with anchor escapement and chiming on eight bells or four gongs with a further hour gong the bell/top case with five vase shape finials applied with a crisply cast gilt brass mounts with a vase of blooms and scrolling leaves the arched door with a bevelled glass, leaf and arrow cast mounts flanked by canted angles applied with figural leafy well cast mounts, the sides with gilt brass fretwork panels depicting a classical figure amongst pendent blooms and leafy scrolls, the back door with a panel pierced with quatrefoil's and roundels raised upon a plinth base with gilt metal mounts, leaf and paw feet. 73cms high x 41x30cms, with substantial winding key, and pendulum (illustrated) NB: See Britten's old clock and watches and their makers, 1986, page 423, Edward John Dent is listed at 61 Strand from 1851 to his death in 1853, and Frederick Dent from 1853 until his death in 1860 (upon his death the name continued until (1864) by 1867 the firm had become E Dent & Company. The firm Dent of London is recognised as the makers of "Big Ben" the main clock in the tower of the House of Parliament. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2080: the case, the central finial tight, back right hand finial loose and requires tightening, gilded metal work dusty requires cleaning, hinged front door hinges tight, glass appears to be original, some discolouration to metalwork border requires cleaning, minor rusting to left hand spandrel to the right hand screw, minor discolouration to the right hand spandrel bottom right hand corner by the screw, canted figural applications some minor discolouration, minor fading to the cavetto and plinth, pierced metal side panels left hand side good condition, right hand side minor discolouration to the outer edge, the arched dial, good condition, the name plaque dull and unpolished, minor discolouration to the outer silvered arch, very minor fading to the left and right hand side of the case showing traces of chalk streaking in polish, the rear door - the inset metal panel metalwork in good condition, some tears and holes to the red material backed lining.

A fine mid 19th Century mahogany cased bracket clock and bracket With a 20cm silvered arched dial Boorman, Gravesend with Roman numerals a strike silent lever above 12 o'clock, the dial finely engraved with scrolling leaves and blooms with pierced blued steel hands the substantial three train fusee and chain movement with anchor escapement and chiming on eight bells with a further hour gong, the back plate applied with a silvered arched plaque signed Boorman, Gravesend, the escapement regulated by a bob pendulum the waisted French style case with a concave sided cresting carved with C scrolls above scrolling leaves and flowers, the C scroll leaf door flanked by scrolling terminals raised upon a plinth base with leaf and gadrooned border raised upon a leaf carved scrolling plinth base. 62x42x20cms, with a conforming mid 19th Century mahogany bracket with a leaf carved frieze above a cavetto moulding raised upon fluted scrolling brackets. 22x47x24cms overall including brackets 84.5cms. (illustrated) *** The maker John Boorman is noted as working in Gravesend from 1839-1860, his business was taken over by his son who continued until early circa 1900. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2081: Mahogany case, good condition, very minor scratching and very minor dents, good colour, the back door some fret carving missing, some with the clock in a bag, a minor piece, missing veneer approximately 5cm x 4cm, a smaller piece 3cm strip and one or two scrolls. The movement working order, chimes working but not run for duration. The bracket good condition, very minor surface scratching. The silvered dial, some rubbing to the outer rim, some rubbing to the inner rim, very minor, one or two blemishes just above the strike silent minor, some rubbing around the inner border, very minor scratching around the winding apertures, hinges to glazed door tight, would appear to be original glass, overall good condition.

(illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 2095: the brass bezel good condition, minor play in the hinge, glass good condition appears to be original, the dial bow front, scratching and enamel chipping around the three fastening screws and traces of paint around the border covering up other minor chips and scratches, some scratches to the centre of the dial around the winding aperture, star shaped crack just below Roman numerals twelve o'clock, overall surface scratching, in keeping locking key for bezel, mahogany border in good condition, wooden screws probably replaced, bottom hinge door hinges good condition, right hand side door hinges good condition, minor chip to the right hand angle of the door, period pendulum and period winding key. Bears a signature added later.

An early 19th Century oak and mahogany crossbanded longcase clock With a 36cm white dial signed T Gaskell, Knutsford with subsidiary seconds and date aperture, Arabic numerals and painted spandrels the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement striking on a bell with a Walker false plate, the case with a swan neck cresting with brass roundel terminals, the crossbanded trunk with a shaped door raised upon a plinth base with canted angles and ogee bracket feet, with two weights and pendulum and winding key. 208cms.

An early 19th Century oak and mahogany inlaid longcase clock With a 30cm white arched dial signed Wainwright, Nottingham with subsidiary date aperture painted with a finch, foliate spandrels, the arch painted with a maiden beside an anchor with masted vessels out to sea, the single train 30 hour movement with outside count wheel striking on a saucer bell, the case with a swan neck cresting with brass roundels and a brass sphere finial above fluted brass cap columns, the crossbanded trunk door inlaid with stringing raised upon a plinth base with pendulum and one weight. 180cms high x 46cms.

A George IV inlaid mahogany longcase clock With a 32cm brass and silvered dial signed in an oval John Irvin Sligoe with subsidiary seconds and date aperture, the matted roundel engraved with leaves, the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement striking on an overhead bell, the case with an arched hood with a shaped pediment and three brass spire finials, the glazed door with a fluted brass bezel inlaid canted angles, the trunk inlaid with a panel and checkering above a short inlaid door raised upon a plinth base and bracket feet, requires restoration to case with two weights, pendulum and two brass and mahogany winding keys, approximately 223cms, width of plinth 44.5cms. An 18th Century oak longcase clock With a 28cm brass dial signed Binch, Liverpool with Roman and Arabic numerals and subsidiary date aperture, cast mask and scroll spandrels the single train 30 hour movement with outside count wheel striking on a saucer bell, the slender case with a cavetto cornice above slender turned square headed columns, the trunk with a shaped long door, brass escutcheon raised upon a plinth base and bracket feet. 193cms x 39cms wide x25cms. Good colour *** Brian Loomes records (watch makers and clock makers of the world volume ll, Binch working from 1767-1777. With pendulum, one weight, wood wheel and lead weight. CONDITION REPORT: The case, minor damage beneath the cavetto cornice approx. 4cmsx0.25cms, glass door original, original putty border good colour to hood, the long door some movement in the drop hinge, door not fitting flush particularly at the bottom gap of 1.5cms, old repair to edge of the top of the door and a small piece of moulding missing, some surface scratching, good colour, minor surface scratching, old split to plinth base and a minor division between the left and right hand boards to the face of the plinth showing daylight, original long back board, bracket feet old, traces of lacquering to the brass chaptering, original hands, the movement would appear to be in good condition with pendulum, one weight, two extra lead wheels.

A George III inlaid mahogany longcase clock With a 31cm arched brass dial with a silver chapter ring signed Helm , Ormskirk with subsidiary seconds, the centre engraved with mask and scrolling leaves, leafy mask spandrels, the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement, rack striking on a saucer bell, the case with a swan neck cresting with flower terminals and urn finials above a glazed panel painted with leaves above turned wood columns, the trunk with a long door, well figured wood flanked by quarter columns raised upon a panelled plinth base with two weights, pendulum and movement winding key, glazed door cracked. approximately 231cms x width of plinth 50x25cms. CONDITION REPORT: Condition Report Lot 2115 - not in working order. date approx 1780-1800 The case, turned finials on left and right hand side possibly replaced, central finial possibly replaced traces of glue beneath the plinth on which it sits, old polish within the flowers, some rubbing to the glazed panels to the gilt the arched glass with an extended crack from left to right, the hinges are loose particularly the top hinge requires strengthening, some movement to the lower hinge, piece of veneer missing to the corner of the top of the upright column on the left hand side, lower plinth to the upright column piece of plinth missing at the back, return moulding right hand side beneath the right hand column piece of moulding missing at the back measures approx. 10cmsx0.25cms long door, some movement to the top hinge requires tightening, slight drop to the right hand side minor, the case possibly polished, some scratching to the plinth, some scratching to the bracket feet particularly the right hand side, original back board with old tape running the full length upto plinth, inside of the hood an old canvas applied on the left hand side and two strips of the right hand side where old splits have been brought together, the arched dial the seconds hand bent, scratching to the silver chaptering and scratches to the metal below, some scratching to the outer gilt brass ground, original foot board, repair to the wire upright which guides the pendulum, movement dusty not running, one winding wheel attached to cat gut one winding wheel separated, repair to the pendulum, the bob scratched. IN MY OPINION THE DIAL, MOVEMENT AND CASE BELONG TOGETHER.

A 19th Century oak and mahogany and rosewood inlaid longcase clock With a 30cm white dial signed J Palin, Nantwich with subsidiary seconds lacking finger above a date aperture, Roman numerals, the spandrels painted with a classical dwelling, the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement, rack striking on a bell the case with a swan neck cresting above turned wood columns, the trunk with a short door inlaid with a rosewood lozenge raised upon a plinth base and bracket feet, requires restoration, with a pendulum and movement winding key, no weights. 206cms, width of plinth 47cms x 21cms.

A 19th Century carved oak longcase clock With 30cm arched brass dial signed Edward Hopkins, Bradford with subsidiary seconds and date aperture, the spandrels engraved with figures emblematic of the four seasons, the lunar calendar engraved with the "moons age" painted with a galleon and figures in landscape, the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement, rack striking on a saucer bell, the case with a cavetto cornice above leaf carved spandrels, damaged glazed door, the trunk carved with flower heads and leaves, lozenge and flower carved sides raised upon a panel plinth similarly carved and shaped bracket feet. 220cms high x width of plinth 42cms x 23cms, with two weights, pendulum and movement winding key.

A mahogany cased granddaughter clock With an arched brass dial with a silvered chapter ring, Roman and Arabic numerals, cast mask and leafy spandrels the arch centred with an oval cast with fruit and leaves pierced blued hands and a centre seconds sweep the two train eight day movement with anchor escapement now striking on coiled gong with a four pillar brass movement the case with a swan neck cresting with rose finials, rose terminals above a gilt metal pineapple finial, pierced fretwork frieze above fluted baluster columns, pierced fretwork sides the trunk with a mahogany crossbanded door flanked by similar columns raised upon a panel plinth base and claw and ball feet, plain rear legs with two weights and a pendulum. 192cms high x30x47cms. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: The case, the hood with a pineapple gilt finial, the plinth which it sits upon and the lower small plinth may be associated, dentil and blind fretwork and flowers good condition, hinges sound but a little loose, glass good condition, old putty around the rim, fluted columns good condition, fret work sides good condition, the trunk door fits flush to cabinet no warp, hinges solid no movement, minor scratching just below the door, minor surface scratching to raised panel plinth, some scratching to front claw and egg feet, the arched dial surface scratching to the arch, possibly later centre sweep hand, movement striking on a coiled gong, foot board original some rust to the pendulum hook, some signs of later soldering to the bracket which supports the pendulum, movement complete, some space between the arched dial and the cheek boards, with two weights and a pendulum.
