PETER HATHORNTHWAITE (KIRKBY LONSDALE - Died 1779) A HANDMADE OAK CASED LONG-CASE CLOCK having a flat hood with fret carved frieze, plain glass door between turned columns, long pollarded oak trunk door over a similar base, the 8 day brass dial with cast spandrels, the silvered chapter ring, with Roman hours and Arabic seconds inscribed PETER HATHORNTHte FECIT, framing sun and moon phases over a dial numbered up to 29½ and date aperture. Sold with pendulum and two weights. Case made in 1978 at a cost of £380 including clock repair.

(Sold with two weights and pendulum). The clock case is in very poor condition through being in damp conditions. Many pieces will require re-gluing and repair.

R. Davenport in 1863

A George III oak and mahogany crossbanded long case clock, the 30cm painted square dial with Roman numerals, calendar aperture, thirty hour movement striking on a bell, inscribed Deacon of Barton, the hood with swan neck cresting, ring turned columns, shaped rectangular door to waist inlaid to centre with lozenge, flanked by fluted quarter columns, conforming base, bracket feet, 205cm high, c.1820 Samuel Deacon was Leicestershire's most celebrated clockmaker, and was born at Ratby 06/02/1746 who set up in business at Barton-in-the-Beans in 1771 and died in 1816 leaving several sons and successors. They continued until at least 1860 and the contents of the workshop eventually found their way to Leicester Museum

A George III oak long case clock, the 28cm square brass dial with silvered chapter ring, Roman numerals, thirty hour movement, mask head pierced spandrels, inscribed to centre Noon, Ashby, the hood with moulded cornice, free standing pilasters, shaped door to waist, moulded base, 216cm high, c.1755 William Noon of Ashby, was working c.1755/ 1780 and producing clocks almost of metropolitan quality, of which this is an example from very early in his career. He had two sons, William, who continued the business at Ashby 1784/1808 and Thomas who was a clock and watchmaker at High Street, Burton-upon-Trent, 1788-1835

Whitehurst Derby - a George III oak long case clock, the 32cm circular brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, inscribed Whitehurst, Derby, eight-day movement striking on a bell, arched hood, shaped long rectangular door to waist flanked by quarter pilasters, 193cm high, c.1775 John Whitehurst FRS, of Derby (1713-1788) pioneered the round dial in from 1760, writing to his friend James Ferguson that he failed to see the point in a square dial when the action of the hands was rotative; to make the change would also save the expense of cast brass spandrels, separate chapter ring, pounced centres, etc., making his excellent quality clocks more affordable for ordinary people. The earliest dated examples are 1760 and 1761 and they set a distinctive east and north midlands trend. This example is in a shortish version of a typical Whitehurst standard case of which there were three types and would have been made, in all probability, in the 1770s. A George III mahogany longcase clock, the 33cm arched painted dial, subsidiary seconds dial, twin winding holes, eight day movement striking on a bell, pierced gilt hands, incised Thomas Gilbert, Rugeley, painted scene to arch of a shepherd and shepherdess resting, the hood with swan neck pediment stop fluted columns with composite capitals, shaped rectangular door to waist flanked by conforming quarter columns on canted fluted base, 213cm high, c.1800. A member of a sizeable Staffordshire dynasty, Thomas Gilbert was the younger son of another Thomas Gilbert (1751-1818), a clockmaker at Lichfield (until 1793) and thereafter at Rugelely as well. From 1814-1842 he worked at Rugeley, latterly from Wellington Street. He left two sons, George, who succeeded him at Rugeley and James who was a clockmaker in Lichfield
