In the manner of Thomas Smythe (1825-1906) – a 19th century sketchbook bound in gilt tooled boards containing 48 pasted-down pen and ink sketches depicting typical Smythe scenes, including depictions of Punch & Judy shows, travellers in East Anglian landscapes, organ grinders performing with their monkey, agricultural workers, Gypsy encampments, horses feeding, door-to-door vendors, fisherfolk etc, mostly numbered to the corners (but not in order), a couple of the sketches more resemble works by brother Edward Robert Smythe, no inscriptions or dates, the gilt edged pages not all used and showing signs of sketch removal, many pages have been cut out, sketches approx. 23 x 20cm, sketchbook 28 x 38cmView every page here.Note: Most of the sketches bear striking resemblances to known Smythe paintings and include many of the same motifs, however nothing further is known about them and the sketchbook was acquired at auction without attribution or provenance.

*A Sheraton period mahogany and inlaid inverted breakfront sideboard, the top with satinwood crossbanding and ebony and boxwood chequer stringing, the sides with twin cupboard doors with oval crossbanded fielded panels, the central bowfront frieze drawer over fan marquetry inlays, the whole raised on moulded and square tapering supports, w.168cm, d.66cm, h.90.5cmCondition report: The whole stands well.Of good, rich and consistent colour.Top with fine 15” split to back right corner.Left hand side doors with veneer blistering and loss.Right hand door with vertical split.Right front panel with horizontal 9” split.Some minor veneer losses / repairs.Typical age wear but otherwise good.Brass escutcheons are old replacements.Provenance: Consigned from a local deceased estate, being descendants of Robert Heath (of Robert Heath & Sons, founders of the Biddulph Valley Colliery and Iron Works) who resided at Biddulph Grange between 1871-1922, and direct descendants of the Earls of Denbigh of Newnham Paddox.

A 19th century French elm armoire of slim proportions; single panelled door opening to reveal a shelf and hanging space, raised on stile feet (80cm wide x 43cm deep x 194cm high)The piece appears to be of a good colour; it has 'suffered' with a lot of historic woodworm to the front panels but this has mostly been filled with polish and polished out; where the panels make up the sides the shrinkage across the grain is parting the panel and there is a bit of woodworm to the rear left-hand stile about 21/2 ft up manifesting itself into 11/2/2" oval areas where the woodworm has eaten the wood away; the cabinet is also noted to be leaning slightly to the left, upon opening the door there is a shelf and hanging space which looks pretty dry but in need of a clean etc.; the moulding at the bottom appears original and in good order and the stile feet also appear original and in good order. The Auctioneer reports that the item could be made much better and restored to a good standard for a reasonably non-expensive cost.

Lot 521

A 19th century mahogany pedestal desk; the leather inset thumbnail moulded top above an arrangement of three frieze drawers and two panelled cupboard doors below, each door opening to reveal three further graduated drawers, raised on plinth base with recess china castors (122cm wide x 81cm deep x 98.5cm high)The leather at the top is a bit scratched and at the front, where the middle drawer is, there is some leather away (please see images); left-hand drawer at the front -- both of the turned handles are broken; two panelled doors underneath each opening to reveal three graduated drawers, left-hand side top drawer the handle is away and is quite badly damaged, the right-hand set of drawers appears OK; scuffs, marks and knocks commensurate with age to the plinth base with china castors underneath. Looking at it from the front -- right-hand side two panels look OK -- there is a little bit of veneer away but nothing major; it is quite dark towards the bottom; looking at the left-hand panelled side -- three pieces of moulding are away from one of the panels and do not appear to be with the desk. Minor pieces of veneer away to the edge of the thumbnail moulding and some minor splitting to the edge of the thumbnail moulding and also scratches etc. Overall, the desk would require renovation in the Auctioneer's view to get up to scratch.
