A RARE PALACE SIZED ‘PAVILION OF PRINCE TENG - TENGWANGGE - 滕王閣圖’ PORCELAIN FISHBOWL CHINA, JINGDEZHEN KILNS, MID TO LATE QING DYNASTY Heavy potted with a round body. It is adorned in underglaze cobalt blue enamels with a majestuous fortified city along the river, with sampan boats sailing the river as well as with numerous walking characters. Also to be noted are the friezes of geometrical patterns and flower patterns that enhanced this piece: ice cracking plum flowers on the top of the rim; reserved circles underlining the everted rim; lozenges below together with alternate flower crests, a rare pattern. On the main door or entrance of the city is hanging a panel inscribed with ‘章江门’, lit. ‘Zhāng jiāngmén’, i.e. the name of the entrance or of the pavilion. In front of that entrance, two floating flags or banners are inscribed with ‘洪都新府’, lit. ‘Hóng dū xīn fǔ’, i.e. the so-called Tengwang Pavilion, one of the three (3) Great Towers if Southern China. H: 45 cm - D: 51 cm Notes: Aquariums or fish bowls of this size are quite rare and may have been produced to fit a palace or a large residency. Our example is very finely painted with beautiful shades of underglaze cobalt blue and, further to that, is adorned with a rare subject. The painter has deployed a continuous scene all over the fishbowl. The subject of the painting is that of the Tengwang Pavilion (滕王閣, or Pavilion of Prince Teng), located in the old Nanchang City (南昌), Jiangxi Province, on the bank of the Ganjiang River (赣江). This building is considered to be one of the three (3) Great Towers of Southern China. This famous pavilion, re-built many time since its creation, is mentioned by a Tang Dynasty poet, Wang Po (王勃), 650-676), in his ‘Preface to a Farewell Feast Atop the Prince Teng’s Pavilion in Autumn’ (秋日登洪府滕王閣餞別序). In this title are the ideograms ‘洪都新’ that we find on the two banners in front of the city on the fish bowl. It is also to be noted that it has been a main subject for paintings: see, inter alia, the painting attributed to Wang Zhenpeng (王振鵬, circa 1280-1329) preserved in the collection of the Princeton University Art Museum, USA, under accession number 2010-65. Click HERE to see the related painting. Compare with a brushpot (bitong) adorned with the same subject and preserved in the collection of the Museum of Nanchang, Nan Chang Shi Bo Wu Guan. Also compare with a series of porcelain pieces preserved in the Tengwangge (滕王閣圖) or Pavilion of Prince Teng, in the same city.
