GONZALO BILBAO MARTÍNEZ (Seville, 1860 - Madrid, 1938).Untitled.Oil on canvas.Attached certificate issued by Don Gerardo Pérez Calero.It has damages in the frame.Stamp on the back.Signed in the lower right corner.Measurements: 40 x 32,5 cm; 52 x 43,5 cm (frame).In this work the artist depicts a picturesque corner consisting of a vaulted midá or fountain of ablutions, covered on the outside with whitish-blue tiles and situated at the open door of an oratory or mosque. It should be noted that Bilbao spent several years in Morocco, visiting Tangiers and other cities, the result of which is the series he produced at that time in which he evokes the aesthetics of Orientalism.Gonzalo Bilbao took up drawing as a child and in 1880 he began his career as a painter. Around this time he travelled to Italy and France with Jiménez de Aranda. In Rome he worked with the painter José Villegas Cordero, and travelled around the various Italian capitals, painting urban and rural views until his return to Spain in 1884. In the following years he visited Rome again, travelled around Spain and also went to Morocco, Paris and Munich. In Spain he taught painting, initially as a private tutor and, from 1903, as Jiménez de Aranda's successor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. In 1904 he married and took up residence in Madrid, where he continued his teaching work at the San Fernando Academy. During his career he took part in numerous fine arts exhibitions, both national and foreign, being awarded a third medal at the Universal Exhibition of Paris (1889) and the International Exhibition of Barcelona (1891), a single medal at the Universal Exhibition of Chicago (1893), and a gold medal at the International Exhibitions of Berlin (1899), Munich (1905), Buenos Aires (1910), Santiago de Chile (1910), San Francisco (1915) and Panama (1916). He also took part in the National Fine Arts Nationals, winning second medals in 1887 and 1892, first in 1899 and 1901 and an honourable medal in 1915. A traditional painter, representative of Spanish genre painting, his pictures were colourful depictions of Andalusian life and its most popular figures, and he also painted landscapes, figures and portraits, depicting prominent figures of the time such as King Alfonso XIII and the actress Carmen Díaz. The light and vitality of his compositions bring his language closer to the Impressionist aesthetic, focusing on the essential representation of atmospheres and landscapes. Gonzalo Bilbao is represented in the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville, where he has a room devoted entirely to his work, the Museo del Prado, the Museo Jaume Morera in Lleida and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Cordoba, among others, as well as in private collections both in Spain and abroad.
An early 19th century English gilt bronze mounted crackle glazed Chinese porcelain vasethe mounts in the manner of Benjamin Vulliamy (1747-1811) and Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy (1780-1853)the grey crackle glazed baluster body with a relief moulded biscuit undulating key border and scalloped girdle, the foot with a similar narrow band, the whole with applied stylised lion drop ring handles, the rim with applied flared fluted and lobed rim mounts, the foot rim mount with trellis cast border, the vase raised on an a shallow square porphyry plinth base, the vase 36.6cm high, 39cm high overall including the plinth (2)Footnotes:Benjamin Vulliamy and his son Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy (1780-1854) who traded in London as Vulliamy & Son, belonged to a family of Swiss extraction whose original business of making clocks and watches expanded rapidly during the last quarter of the 18th century due much to the entrepreneurial spirit of the senior member of the family, Benjamin. Trading from 74 Pall Mall, their surviving Ornament and Clock Books contain extensive details regarding their business practices which clearly indicate that their craftsmen were not necessarily employees of the firm, but were 'individuals or firms largely resident in London who were working independently for their own account,' (See: Furniture History, 1967, Geoffrey de Bellaigue, 'The Vulliamys and France,' pp. 45-53). Besides mechanical movements for their watches and clocks, they also designed and had made elaborate cases which incorporated porcelain figures which were supplied by William Duesbury of Derby. In addition they supplied ornamental metalwork in many guises and, as de Bellaigue remarks, 'they were prepared to supply their customers with anything from a chimney-piece to a door handle, from a piano to a button.' The Vulliamys were fully aware of current taste on the Continent and France, not only utilizing published French designs, but also copying actual French objects or their components. They are also recorded as actually purchasing works of art in Paris, either on commission or for resale, and also utilized the workshops of the Delafontaines, 'who were among the most eminent bronze manufacturers active in Paris in the beginning of the nineteenth century,' (Bellaigue, op. cit.). The Delafontaines are shown in Vulliamys' books 'as suppliers of bronze mounts, chased but not gilt, which were incorporated into candelabras, inkstands, clocks and mounted porcelain jars,' as seen on the present vases. The Vulliamys had an illustrious list of clients, including many members of the aristocracy and eminent personages, together with the patronage of the Royal Family including the Prince Regent to whom they supplied elaborate mounts, all with comparable square bases, for several Chinese porcelain vases which in the Royal Collection. These included three Chinese famille rose jardinières (RCINs 48 and 101659.1-2) and a set of four jardinières with bowls of dark blue Spode ware in imitation of Chinese porcelain (RCINs 700.1–4).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the fourteen-inch painted break-arch dial having black Roman hour numerals, subsidiary seconds and date dials to the centre, various scenes depicting the continents painted to the four corners and arch, and with gilt-brass hands, the mahogany flat-top case having canted corners to the trunk, moulded edges to the door, cross-banding to the base and an overhanging moulding to the hood, all standing on bun feet, height 213cm.
