An early 20th century silver metal mounted kingwood armoire, with single mirrored door stamped 'Gros Paris', 118cm wide x 215cm high. Footnote: Jean-Louis-Benjamin Gros is recorded as an ébéniste and marqueteur at 27 rue des Blancs-Manteaux Paris until 1850 and then at 43 rue des Tournelles until 1863. He was associated with the Winckelsen firm acting as its main cabinet-maker. His son Aristide-Henry took over the business following his retirement. Both father and son exhibited at the major 19th century Exposition Universelle and won an honourable citation in 1855. They specialised in reworkings of late 17th /18th century designs and both stamped their pieces 'Gros, Paris'.
An 18th century scarlet Japanned eight day longcase clock, the arch top twelve inch dial with subsidiary second and calendar apertures amongst gilt corner spandrels, signed 'Robert Higgs, London', the hood with flanking columns over arch trunk door, on plinth base, 220cm high, one pendulum, weights lacking.
Late 18th century AD. A Georgian period green baize-lined mahogany hinged-lid box with brass lock (no key) containing a suite of three graduated cut-steel safe or vault keys each with round bow and baluster turned shaft; the largest with removable sprung dust preventer to bore; the wards precision-cut in different but matching geometric patterns. 683 grams, box: 16 x 9 x 7.5cm (longest key: 13.5cm) (6 1/4 x 3 1/2 x 3 (5 1/4)"). Property of a Hampshire gentleman; by inheritance 1970s. It is likely that the largest key would fit a vault door and that the two smaller keys would be to safes within the vault; the slightly different sizes would prevent confusion for the user. Very fine condition. Rare.
