HRH Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent - a fascinating handwritten letter to Peter Coats, dated Coppins, June 10th 1941. The Princess thanks Peter for helping her sister, Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark and her husband, Prince Paul of Yugoslavia. She mentions Chips (Channon) has kept her informed of the tragic developments and what a ghastly nightmare it has become. She hopes that her sister and Prince Paul can come to England soon but there are obstacles to overcome - but he must keep it to himself. She hopes to see Peter at Coppins soon, signed - 'Always yours very sincerely - Marina'. This fascinating letter refers to the fact that Prince Paul was removed as Regent of Yugoslavia by the British Government for signing a pact with Germany in order to keep Greece's neutrality. Rather than coming to England as his sister-in-law hoped, he and his family were kept under house arrest by the British in Kenya for the duration of the War. In another strange twist, Peter Coats was the boyfriend of Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon who had left his wife for him only two years beforehand and was the Duke and Duchess of Kent's next door neighbour in London.
