Lot 1465

A Continental oak and mahogany wardrobe, with detachable moulded cornice above a mirrored door enclosing hanging space and with panelled sides. Height excluding finials 221 cm, width 112 cm, depth 50 cm.

Lot 1163

A Regency mahogany ebony strung sarcophagus shaped cellarette, with revolving door opening to five decanter or bottle apertures and all raised on paw feet. Height 60 cm, width 76 cm, depth 51.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cellarette is in generally good original condition. The front revolving panel operates as it should and the interior lining and bottle separator are in good order. The front panel is in good condition. The top is in good order and of generally good colour with only minor liquid splashes. The right hand side has old veneer fractures but no losses and no lifting. The rear panel is in generally good order. The only minor problem is that the fronts of the paw feet have been badly scuffed and scratched. The same applies to the right hand rear leg and less so the left. It is difficult to see what might have caused this.

Lot 1283

A George III mahogany longcase clock by Joseph Gibson Ecclefechan, with brass dial and eight day striking movement with moon phase, the case with swans neck pediment, fluted columns and well figured trunk door. Height 236 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is in generally extremely good condition. The case has clearly been fairly recently re-polished and is in extremely good order. The gilt terminals to the swans neck pediment and the capitals to the pillars have been re-painted. The hood is in good condition. The trunk door is not warped. The sides of the case are in good condition. The bracket feet are original. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. The movement winds on both trains and is currently ticking away. It strikes when advanced. The dial and moon phase have had some restoration and are in good condition with only minor marks and scratches as one would probably expect.

Lot 1055

A Regency mahogany brass strung lancet type bracket clock, by Grant Fleet Street London, with enamelled dial and two train striking movement, both the dial and backplate marked with the makers details. Height 46 cm, width excluding lions mask handles 25 cm, depth 14 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains. It is currently ticking away. The movement strikes when advanced but is currently striking at quarter to the hour rather than on the full hour. Clearly some adjustment somewhere is necessary. The dial is in generally good order with some minor overpainting around the right hand winding aperture. The door closes as it should. It locks and we have the key. The rear door closes correctly. The lock is present. The case is in generally good condition with no significant issues. All brasswork is present. There are no significant splits or fractures and no significant damage.

Lot 1309

A 19th century mahogany Chippendale style glazed cabinet on stand, with blind fretwork carved legs. Height 123 cm, width 68 cm, depth 28.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both the cabinet and stand are structurally very sound with no loose joints. It is in good original overall condition with no signs of any restoration or re-polishing. The door is not warped. It closes as it should. One pane of glass is cracked. The moulding and frieze below the glazed cabinet are in good condition all round with only minor stress fractures. The legs are all in good condition with no evidence of any woodworm. The cabinet is finished on all sides and is freestanding.

Lot 1609

A 19th century Dutch walnut glazed cabinet, fitted with three base drawers. Width 151 cm, height 180 cm, depth at cornice 36 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cornice is in generally good condition. There is a small loss to the top moulding on the rear right hand return and the cornice is a little loose at this point. The doors are not significantly warped and meet in the middle. The left hand door glass is all intact. The right hand door upper left pane is cracked. The bottom right hand pane is missing. There is some scuffing and flaking to the paint on the shelves. The base is in reasonably good order. There is a small section of moulding missing on the right hand side. The drawers are all a little stiff. The bottom drawer has some veneer fractures. There are nibbles to the veneers on the shaped apron and some scuffs to the feet. There is some evidence of old woodworm but in our opinion this has long gone.

Lot 1159

An antique elm dresser, with moulded edge and fitted with a series of drawers and cupboards raised on bracket feet. Height 78 cm, width 130 cm, depth 49 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The dresser base is in extremely good order. It is a good colour. The top is flat with no losses or any significant scuffs or marks. The moulded edge is in good condition all round. All drawer fronts are in good order. The handles appear to be original as are the lock escutcheons. Both doors close as they should. They are not warped. The bracket feet are in good order all round. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. Both door locks are present. We have the key which also operates the drawer locks. There is a half shelf behind the left hand cupboard door. There is no shelf in the right hand cupboard, but supports for one are present.

Lot 1542

An early 18th century longcase clock with eight day striking movement by Wat Broadhurst Lichfield, the two train striking movement with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, face dimensions 28 cm x 28 cm, the hood with moulded cornice and the trunk door with lenticle and all raised on bun feet complete with weights and pendulum. Height 213 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains and is currently ticking away, striking and keeping good time. The case is in extremely good condition from top to bottom. The door closes as it should and is not warped. The clock has a rising hood (i.e. no door). With the hood in situ the face does seem to fit correctly. The seat board is clearly original. In our opinion the clock is not a marriage. The clock has come in for sale from an extremely good local estate along with the better pieces of oak furniture in this sale.

A Mappin & Webb mantle clock, with burr yew veneered case, single train movement raised on carved bracket feet. Height 15 cm, depth 8 cm, width 13 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds and the clock is currently ticking away. The silvered dial has some minor scratches to the silvering. The numerals have some black paint loss. The case itself is in generally very good order with no losses or any significant damage. The colour is good. There are no missing sections of veneer to the front or sides and only minor nibbles around the edge of the rear push in door. These are not visible with the door in position. The bracket feet are original and all present. We have the winding key.

Lot 1362

A Victorian walnut three tier graduated whatnot stand and combined cupboard, inlaid and well figured and raised on short turned legs terminating in castors. Maximum width 81 cm, height 46 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The height of the lot should read 146 cm. The maximum width is +/- 81 cm. The maximum depth is +/- 60 cm. The side depths are top tier 36 cm, 2nd tier 43 cm, 3rd tier 51 cm, bottom tier 56 cm. Top shelf depth from the front of the rear turning to front shelf edge 30.5 cm, shelf two 38 cm, shelf three 45 cm, lower tier 51 cm. the condition of the piece is generally extremely good. There are no losses to the fretwork. The colour is good. The veneers are in generally good condition with no significant staining or lifting. The door is not warped. We have the lock and key. The lock is a little stiff. The legs are in good order and the castors are original. All turned supports are in good order. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1071

A Victorian black slate and marble mantle clock, with two train movement striking on a gong. Height 32 cm, width 26 cm. CONDITION REPORT: We do have a key. The movement is currently fully wound on both trains. It does strike when advanced. It is however only ticking for a few seconds at a time at the moment. We have the pendulum. The gong mechanism is a little loose. The clock face is in generally good order as is the glazed door. The case has all of the usual small nibbles and chips as one would probably expect.

Lot 36

A Japanese lacquered tabletop cabinet, late 19th century. Width 30 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is structurally sound but it does have numerous small losses to the cane work. This is particularly evident along the front top edge and around the door panels. The sides of the piece also have cane losses to the extremities. The doors are not warped and close as they should. All drawers are clean and in good order, all handles are present. There are some losses to the lacquer but nothing significant. The rear panel has some losses to the canework and there are scuffs around the base moulding.

Lot 1551

A George III mahogany bedside cabinet, with wavy gallery, single door with brass drop handle and raised on tapered legs of square section. Height 83 cm, width 36 cm, depth 36 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is structurally sound. The gallery is in good order all round. The top has slight undulations and numerous old ring and scorch marks. There is also one stress fracture. The colour is however fairly good and the top serviceable. The sides of the piece are in good order. The door has a small veneer loss to the bottom left hand corner and slight water damage. The legs are all in good order with no breaks. The backboard is in good order also with only minor stress fractures. There is no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1212

An oak pedestal desk, fitted with three frieze drawers and cupboards and sliding trays to each pedestal. Width 155 cm, depth 80 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The desk separates into three pieces. It is generally structurally sound. The writing surface is not pierced and it does have numerous surface marks and scratches as one would expect. The oak surround is a little scuffed at the extremities and there are some minor polish losses. All three frieze drawers run smoothly. The handles are original. The left hand door is missing the actual lock mechanism. The three pull out trays are modern replacements. The centre tray will not slide out due to the later lock hasp. The right hand door opens to original shelves. The handle is missing but the lock is present. We have no keys. The sides and back panels are all in good order. The plinth base has the usual scuffs and marks as one would expect.

Lot 1625

An oak longcase clock, with brass dial inscribed "Jonas Barber" with eight day movement. CONDITION REPORT: This clock is a marriage. The dial does not match the movement. The movement and dial do not match the case. The hood is in generally good order with no significant issues. There is a veneer nibble to the bottom left hand corner of the door. The trunk door is not warped. It locks and we have the key. The base is in generally good order. The lower moulding and bracket feet are old but later replacements. The clock winds on both trains and does strike when advanced. It appears to be ticking away. The movement is dirty. The silvering to the chapter ring is a little perished.

A William Kemp of Lewes eight day striking longcase clock movement in matched case, with arched trunk door and raised on bracket feet. Height 206 cm.

Lot 1330

A pair of 19th century mahogany bedside cabinets, each with tambour door and raised on turned tapered legs. Width 44 cm, depth 34 cm, height 76 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Both cabinets are structurally sound. Both cabinet tops have veneer stress fractures but no significant veneer losses. They both have surface scratches, scuffs and marks. The crossbanded edges beneath have some sections of veneer missing. One door runs smoothly. The second door left hand upright (where the brass handle is) is detached from the tambour front. The tambour front is a little stiff to operate. The sides of both cabinets are in good condition. All legs are in good order with no evidence of any repairs or restoration.

Lot 1120

An early 19th century oak and mahogany crossbanded longcase clock with eight day striking movement by Caygill of Askrigg, the case with swans neck pediment above the arched glazed door and with long trunk door flanked by fretwork quarter round columns. Height 220 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The dial is inscribed Cr Caygill Askrigg. The round dowel in the arch is inscribed Henry Gilles Lodge 1771. The mask around the dial does not quite fit. The seatboard is clearly later and not quite deep enough by +/- 0.5 cm. The dial configuration is slightly odd in that there are roundels above the winding apertures indicating that the current eight day movement may not be original to the face (this is pure supposition). The movement winds on both trains. We have both weights. The movement is ticking away and advancing when striking. The pendulum does not appear to be quite the correct fit. The case is in generally good condition. The brass finial is loose as is the carved section beneath the finial. There are some nibbles to the extremities of the swans neck pediment but all dentil work is present. The hood is in generally good order, the door closes correctly. The glass is not cracked. The trunk door is not warped. The blind fretwork to the sides of the trunk door is in good order. The sides of the trunk are in good condition also. The right hand side base fretwork has one small loss. The base itself is in generally good order. The bracket feet are intact. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. Dial width 12”, dial height 17.25"

A Georgian mahogany secretaire bookcase, with moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the base fitted with a secretaire drawer modelled as two and opening to a fitted interior and with three further drawers beneath all with brass knob handles and raised on short turned feet. Height 236 cm, width 124 cm, depth 56 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The secretaire bookcase is in generally good original order. The cornice has a minor veneer nibble to the front right hand corner. The frieze beneath is in good condition all round. The doors are not warped. They meet in the middle. There are no broken panes of glass. The door lock is present. It operates. We have the key. The brass lock escutcheon is missing. The secretaire drawer front is in good condition. The front falls as it should. The green baize is a little tired and later. All drawers are present. One drawer knob handle is damaged. The left hand bottom corner of the secretaire drawer is missing a section of cockbeading. All handles are present and would appear to be original. The three drawers beneath the secretaire are all in generally good condition. There are no splits to the sides. The moulding beneath is in good order. The turned feet are original and all present. They have some minor nibbles as one might expect. The backboards are original.

Knocks and bumps. An area of loss to the top right hand side of the cabinet. Possibly had replacement shelves or additional shelves added at some point. Lock mechanism working but the other catching side is not present. Wear and tear conducive with age and use including knocks, bumps and scrapes, etc. See images for more details.

An imposing late 19th century, 18th century style, ebonised and gilt metal mounted, three-train bracket clock, with 'flame' finials, applied masks and caryatids, the sides with pierced and relief-moulded sound frets, the 8" foliate engraved, gilded, arched dial, with strike/silent dial in the arch and an 8-day, triple fusee, three-train musical movement, striking on 5 gongs, with a matching bracket, clock 65cm high. With bracket approximately 95cm high. With bracket, pendulum, winder and key (5)Condition report: Back door and frame damaged, especially moulding along the opening edge of the top and right edges. Left side of door cracked and damaged. Working train not operational in vendor's home. Striking train appears to work, as 1-2 o'clock chimes as it should. Overall bracket ok, like clock, apart from minor chips dents and scratches.

A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase, the upper section with a broken swan-neck pediment and dentilled cornice, above two glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves, the projecting base with a secretaire drawer, enclosing a fitted interior, above two cupboard doors, enclosing slides, flanked by four short drawers on each side, raised on a plinth base, 159cm wide x 62cm deep x 260cm highCondition report: Generally ok but lacking 8cm section of centre beading on cupboard doors. Lacking sections of veneer on stiles and rails, including 8cm on right of left short drawer and on rail below, a 4cm x 3cm section restored, and on right side of doors three patches, 4cm, 3cm and 2cm long. Lacking sections of cockbead, including 3cm, 5cm and 7.5cm sections of cockbeads. Left side of base with 46cm hairline crack and left side of top of base with 20cm hairline crack. Gilding worn on handles. Right branch of swan-neck re-glued/restored halfway up. Several panes of glass cracked, including top middle of right door. Chips, dents and scratches consistent with age and use.
