They have always been associated with the hanging of cured sides of bacon, however it seems more likely that the use of these high back settles was as a hanging space for outdoor clothing, as a display shelf, or more particularly as a room divider. The principal living room in a West Country farmhouse was the kitchen, with the entrance directly from the outside and an open fire creating cold draughts. The use of a high back settle, also seen next to the fire place in Taverns, could avert the draught, creating warmth around the hearth. A good colour and in original farmhouse condition.
