A mid-18th century panelled elm bacon settle, with curved back, door and cupboards to the reverse, panelled sides with armrests and small cupboards to the box seat base 183 x 159 x 80cm (71 x 62 x 31in) Bacon Settles were a feature of the farmhouse kitchen throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. They have always been associated with the hanging of cured sides of bacon, however it seems more likely that the use of these high back settles was as a hanging space for outdoor clothing, as a display shelf, or more particularly as a room divider. The principal living room in a West Country farmhouse was the kitchen, with the entrance directly from the outside and an open fire creating cold draughts. The use of a high back settle, also seen next to the fire place in Taverns, could avert the draught, creating warmth around the hearth. A good colour and in original farmhouse condition.
