Napier, William John, 8th Baronet Manuscript, Private Diary during the years 1833-1834, "Part 1 Jan. 2 1833 to July 1833", 4to, c. 80 pages, inscribed on front endpaper "Most Private & Confidential. Log Book 1833", a very interesting and candid diary discussing family, politics, friends, "Dundonald is at this time very busy at Glasgow perfecting his Steam-engine, and making experiments on the expansion of gas with the ultimate view of applying it in the room of steam", conversations with the King at St. James's Palace", "Lord Brougham is certainly possessed of a very winning manner and inspite of a monstrous nose which is always twitching about as if to start from his face, has a delightful expression of Countenance, a smile playing upon his lips and his eyes beaming with kindness, intelligence and good humour", discusses his dinner with their Majesties, Palace politics, political votes in the House of Commons and Lords, journey to Brighton 'with my excellent friend Lord Byron', visit to the Brighton Pavilion 'I have often wondered how the King got through his income, but on seeing at 11 o'clock in the day 17 joints roasting on 5 spits all at the same moment, the difficulty was solved. He pursued his engineering interests firstly through cars before becoming involved with the Great Western Society at Hereford and the restoration of the famous steam locomotive King George V. On moving to Somerset in the late 1970s, he joined and later becoming President of the Society of Friends of the Fleet Air Arm Museum where he was part of the aircraft Restoration Group and worked on a number of plane exhibits for the museum, including a Fairey Albacore torpedo bomber (N4389). When restoration work ceased, Derek encouraged members of the group to become involved in aircraft restoration at the RAF Locking Helicopter Museum near Weston-Super-Mare where he restored a 1950s De Havilland Gypsy Major piston engine. Throughout he accumulated an extensive collection of technical and reference books and manuals from the different aircraft engines he worked on. An active member of the Dorset Clock Society for many years. Derek took great pride in his workshop and amassed a vast array of tools and machinery, and had many articles in the Model Engineer or The Woodworker magazines.
