R.F.C`.- Jerome Keith born La Porte, Indiana, enlisted 21/09/1917 Chicago, Trained with the Canadian 79 Squadron, Camp Taliaferro, Field No.2, left for France and active service 31/08/1917, discharged 24/03/1919 Garden City, Long Island, New York (ii) Pilots Flying Log Book (R.F.C. Can. 711) - 3/03/1918 - 28/02/1919, Curtis JN4`s - Camp Taliaferro, Fort Worth, Texas, Gunnery Card - Lewis & Vickers, March 21st 1918 Log Entry 16th of May 1918- `Flew South til engine trouble caused landing at Alvarado. On taking off motor failed again causing us to side slip into field-Strong wind blew us out of course and to avoid crashing into building I put plane into a cart wheel, but we were to close to the ground and l. wing hit first causing a complete washout to airplane, neither of us seriously hurt` Original Typed Letter, dated March 19th 1918 from Officer in Charge, Kelly Field, South Antonia, Texas to Jerome Keith `Regret to advise you that your friend, Lieut. Leslie Chandler, lost his life at this field, March 8th 1917 when the motor in his airplane developed lack of power and fell in a partial side-slip from seventy-five feet elevation. Lieut. Loud was killed in Aerial Combat, September 28th 1918, while flying over the front. His plane was hit by incendiary bullets while being attacked by several enemy planes and immediately took fire. He landed well within our lines, North West of Verdun, his observer Capt. Trickey, C.A.C. escaped by crawling out on a wing and dropping, however he came immediately to Lt. Loud`s assistance, extracting him from the wreck, but he was already beyond help, being badly burned` `He is buried at the Cemetery near Souilly, France, which is between Bar-le-Duc and Verdun, a single upright propeller marking his grave with proper inscription`.
