19th Century Ashley Down Orphanage Unframed Sampler Worked by Celia Bell, in red cross stitch on a linen ground, with alphabet in various fonts to the upper half and numerous decorative motifs below, including an elephant, cow, cockerel, steam engine, pointing hands, flags, crown, Prince of Wales feathers, heraldic crest, love hearts, houses, bible, the names Ernie, Alice, Clara, Miss Doman etc, backed with linen, 27cm by 38cm Thomas Edward Bell aged 21, a railway clerk for the NER married Sarah Jane Coates aged 17 in Sunderland 1881. They went onto have five children, Ernest born 1882, Audrey 13 January 1884, Celia born 9 April 1886, Hilda born 19 December 1887 and Rhoda 1893. Thomas became a fireman on the SS Rothiemay of Newcastle and unfortunately died of an internal haemorrhage, whilst on board, due to a broken blood vessel in August 1894. Two years later Sarah Jane died in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, age 33 of pulmonary tuberculosis. Their aunt Mrs C A Coates of Rothbury Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne contacted the Ashley Down House, to see if she could place the children in their care. In 1896 Mrs Coates contacted Thomas Bells mother in Sunderland and wrote, 'I told her of the death of the mother and how destitute the five children were, but she would not assist them in anyway, and told me plainly she would do nothing for them, so I have not troubled her again' They were entered into the Ashley Down register on the 3rd September 1896 and numbered as 9435 - Audrey, 9436 - Celia, 9437 - Hilda. Each child needed signatures from various relatives to achieve entry. Audrey was 12 years when sent to Ashley Down as due to failing health, it was felt she would not be able to get a job whilst in this condition. Ernest stayed in Heaton, age 14 as he gained a job as an errand boy. Rhoda aged only 3, was adopted by a local lady and given a home. The Bristol and District Teachers Association created the needlework scheme for the orphanage. Needlework and the samplers they produced were intended as a means to demonstrate the child's proficiency and diligence with a needle. They followed a model sampler made by the teachers, working the alphabet in various fonts always to the top, on the lower half the girls could add motifs of their own or copy from the teaching model. These works demonstrated to potential employers their ability to sew, mark and mend linen. Celia Bell left Ashley Down on the 22nd June 1903, having gained employment as a house parlour maid to Mrs Stancombe at Rockville, Weston Super Mare. Some staining overall to the backing cloth, and a couple of small dark stains. Some discolouration to the reverse.
