J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "North Dakota Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original acrylic painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States North Dakota Commemorative Cover postmarked February 12, 1995. On April 17, 1874, General George Custer extolled the virtues of North Dakota in a rebuttal printed in the Minneapolis Tribune. Custer's nine-page letter was aimed at North Dakota's critics, which included Northern Pacific (NP) director Joseph Dilworth, whose railroad had been granted 10 million acres of land in the Dakota Territory. The NP executive had commented that the government had "made a good deal when exchanging such worthless territory for a transcontinental railroad." An excerpt from Custer's letter disputes that remark by stating that one could see "an almost unbroken sea of green, luxuriant, wavering grass" from nearly every location in the territory. Despite these differences of opinion, the NP did run its transcontinental railroad through the region. And from 1879 to 1882, NP trains even overcame the challenge of crossing North Dakota's Missouri River without benefit of a bridge. This was necessary to make the connection between the towns of Bismarck and Mandan. Most of the year, the trip was made by ferrying the trains from bank to bank. During winter, however, NP trains made the crossing directly on temporary trackage laid over the Missouri River when it was frozen to a depth of several feet. The first train to take this treacherous journey did so on February 12, 1879. This artwork depicts a Missouri River winter crossing featuring NP's engine No. 51 steaming along oversized railroad ties. These were used to spread the weight of the train over a greater area of ice. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14935)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "New Mexico Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States New Mexico Commemorative Cover postmarked July 10, 1995. "Young man, the Santa Fe will put you in Chicago in 46 hours, if steam and steel will hold together. We've got the roadbed, the equipment, and the men." That was the promise made by J.J. Bryne -- General Passenger Agent of the Santa Fe Railway in Los Angeles -- to Walter Scott on July 8, 1905. Scott -- better known as Death Valley Scotty, once a rider for Buffalo Bill -- had requested that the railroad pull out all the stops to get him to Chicago in record time. Obsessed with speed, Scotty plunked down $5,500 and drawled, "Pardner, I like your talk. It sounds good to me. Line 'em up along the way and tell 'em we're comin'." The following afternoon, Scott, his wife, the Santa Fe's Frank Newton Holman and a press association correspondent boarded the Coyote Special bound for the Windy City. Assigned to handle the engines that would speed the Special on its mission were the "Nervy Nineteen," men who "had been picked because they thought there were no curves in the Santa Fe!" Steaming through the mountains and breaking records all along the 2,265-mile route, these engineers each took over the reins of the succession of iron horses that put the Special into Chicago's Dearborn Station at 11:54 a.m. on July 11 -- just 44 hours and 54 minutes after the odyssey had begun. Shown here is Santa Fe's No. 1000, which made the run from Winslow, Arizona, to Gallup, New Mexico. This four-cylinder, 2-6-2, "Prairie" type engine was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1901. J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Tennessee Locomotive" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Legendary Locomotives of the 50 States Tennessee Commemorative Cover postmarked June 3, 1995. On June 3, 1896, several small railroads merged to become the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern Railroad. With this new organization came a directive from owner Henry K. McHarg to devise a more efficient method for crossing Tennessee's Bald Mountain -- located 16 miles north of Copperhill. Although his predecessors had devised a series of switchbacks to solve this dilemma, McHarg was not satisfied with that solution because the system allowed only three or four cars to cross at one time. Thus, in 1898, the Hiwassee Loop was born. Measuring some 8,000 feet long, it was once considered to be the world's third-longest railroad loop. In the six miles between the Tennessee towns of Farrier and Appalachia, the loop accomplished a drop of 426 feet. From the south, the line completely encircled Bald Mountain and crossed under itself through an opening in a 62-foot-high, 195-foot-long wooden trestle to reach the gorge of the Hiwassee River. At the top of the loop, riders were afforded perhaps the most impressive view in the South. From that vantage point they could see three states: Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. Today, the line has been relegated to use only by freight trains. Displayed here is engine No. 25 -- a Vauclain Compound 2-8-0 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works -- steaming through the opening in the wooden trestle on the Hiwassee Loop. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15044)

Jack Fellows (American, B. 1941) "1947 Bell X-1" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Bell X-1 from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. Bell engineers reasoned that bullets had been breaking the sound barrier for years, and so designed their XS-1 (later X-1) with a bullet-shaped body, thin straight wings and a 6,000-pound thrust Reaction Motors rocket unit. After some gliding flights, the great Bell test pilot Chalmers "Slick" Goodlin made the plane's first powered flight on December 9,1946. On October 14,1947, the XS-I dropped from the bomb bay of its B-29 mother-plane. Chuck Yeager was at the controls of the airplane which he had named "Glamorous Glennis" to honor his wife. He fired the chambers of his rocket engine, and at 43,000 feet reached the speed of Mach 1.06, breaking the sound barrier and trashing all of the old theories. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15.5 in. Unframed. (B17111)

ARTIST: Edward T Vebell (Illinois, 1921-2018)NAME: Fulton's Clermont SteamboatYEAR: 1980MEDIUM: acrylic on boardCONDITION: Very good. No visible inpaint under UV light.SIGHT SIZE: 20 x 21 inches / 50 x 53 cmBOARD SIZE: 26 x 27 inches / 66 x 68 cmSIGNATURE: lower rightNOTE: This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. It was the English who invented the first steam engine and the first steam railroad but it was an American, Robert Fulton, who, in 1807, formally launched the steamboat era. Fulton was not the inventor, however, of the steamboat: that distinction belongs to poor John Fitch, a Connecticut Yankee and a veteran of the Continental Army who, as early as 1787, built and launched a forty-five-foot steamboat. But, alas, nothing came of that brave experiment. Fitch could get no financing for his invention and in the end gave up in despair and fled to the wilds of Kentucky where he died. Ten years later, the New York lawyer and diplomat, Robert Livingston, anticipating the role that steamboats might play in a vast nation whose only effective transportation was by water, persuaded his young friend Robert Fulton, with whose artistic and inventive talents he was familiar, to try his hand at building a steamboat. Fulton boasted a natural talent for engineering. He eagerly embraced Livingston's proposal and by 1807 was ready to launch The Clermont, named after Livingston's hometown. On its maiden trip, the boat steamed up the Hudson to Albany and returned five days later, having averaged a speed of five miles an hour. Successful as it was, it brought no great wealth to either Livingston or Fulton, for in 1824, John Marshall's Court pronounced their monopoly unconstitutional as an infringement on congressional power to regulate "commerce concerning the several states."PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. When confronted with a mountain range, the visionaries who built America's railroads had three choices: go around it, over it or through it. Those were the options available to John F. Stevens, engineer for the Great Northern Railway, when he found the Cascade Range between him and his proposed route to Puget Sound. Stevens had already brought the Great Northern through the Rocky Mountains. That experience helped him recognize the virtues of the pass that would eventually bear his name. Stevens Pass was ideal in that it allowed for several different routes. In fact, over the years, the Great Northern has had three routes at the Pass, one over it and two through it. The first ran across the summit on a series of eight arduous and time-consuming switchbacks. Not long after the switchback line was completed, work began on the original Cascade Tunnel. Nine years later, on December 20, 1900, the tunnel was opened and the switchbacks were closed. Although the new route was a vast improvement, it was still beset with severe curves, miles of snow sheds and four-percent grades. So in 1925, the Great Northern began construction on another tunnel at a more favorable site. Opened on January 29, 1929, the second Cascade Tunnel runs 7.8 miles, making it the longest railroad tunnel in the United States. Great Northern's 2-8-0 freight engine No. 1106, featured on this artwork, was built in 1901 by the Rogers Locomotive Works. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Shortly after the turn of the century, railroad promoter Arthur Stilwell began building the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railroad (KCM&O). Claiming that he had "designed a railroad 1,600 miles long which will bring the Pacific Ocean 400 miles nearer to Kansas City than any other present route," Stilwell set out to construct a rail system that would link the Midwest to the port city of Topolobampo, Mexico, which was intended as an entrepot for shipping American goods to the Orient. The line was built in five disconnected sections throughout the United States and Mexico. On April 1, 1903, 74 miles of track -- linking Milton, Kansas, to Carmen, Oklahoma -- became the first completed American segment of the line. Although construction of the KCM&O was fairly rapid at first, in 1910 the Mexican Revolution halted operations on the southern leg of the route. In fact, Francisco "Pancho" Villa -- one of the principal leaders of the revolution -- was one of Stilwell's contractors. By spring of 1912, the troubled KCM&O entered receivership and Stilwell's dream went unfulfilled. In 1928, the Santa Fe Railway acquired the American portion of the KCM&O, and the Mexican segment eventually came under government control. The line wasn't finally completed until 1961. Pictured here is the No. 208 -- one of 15 engines built by the Pittsburgh Locomotive works for the KCM&O between 1909 and 1911. This 2-8-0 engine became Santa Fe's No. 2542, and today is on display in Arkansas City, Kansas.PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. We have been advised by the vendor that this Bedford Camper has been subject to works over the last few years which include a gear-box rebuild in 2014, replacement engine fitted in 2016 which apparently had covered 40,000 miles and a new cam-belt fitted 7,000 miles ago. It was purchased by the vendor in 2019 as an ongoing project, some internal improvements have been undertaken but it has had little use since and would benefit from a good service. Comes with the original service book with some early stamps, MoTs dating from 1994 to 2016 when last issued, some receipts, driver's manual and original sales brochure. The mileage is recorded at 13,385. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 1ST JUNE BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

1977 Moke Automibili JiminiMake: Moke Model: Automibili Year: 1977Mileage: 223VIN: PDB6651Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: XUE122STransmission: manualThe Jimini was a kit car based on the Mini Moke using Mini mechanicals. Unlike many kit cars though, rather than employing a glassfibre body, it had an all-steel one - just as on the original machine. This example seems to have used a red 998cc model as its basis, originally registered and used abroad in 1977, but registered in the UK in February 1978. The vendor believes that the Moke was made by R J B Electronics in Middlesex. He acquired the vehicle in 2017 and tells us that 'all mechanical parts have been replaced with either new or reconditioned units'. The list includes a: 998cc A+ engine, heavy duty clutch, aluminium radiator, new alternator, new suspension (high/low adjustable at the rear), new steering rack, new hydraulic brake and clutch assemblies, new brake discs and pads on front, new drums and shoes at the rear, an overhauled carburettor, recent tyres, Minilite wheels and top cover and side-screens. The engine has done less than 250 miles since being fitted. The car has no current MoT but, as a 1978 vehicle, it is now classed as historic and no longer requires one. The history file includes the V5C, list of new or reconditioned parts, and a stack of bills showing most of the work was carried out during 2018. There's also a Haynes Mini workshop manual.

Launched in spring 1963, GTs had lowered suspension and 78bhp 1498cc engines. This example is fitted with a Lotus Cortina radiator, wheel rims and quarter bumpers. The vendor describes the car as having 'exceptional paintwork and first class finish in the engine bay', although the front grille will require some fettling to fit better around the indicators. The car was registered in June 1966 and has four former registered keepers noted on its V5C. The odometer reading is 57,377 miles. The V5C indicates that a 1.6-litre engine is now fitted. As an historic vehicle, there is no current MoT as the Cortina is now exempt from annual testing. There is no paperwork with the car beyond the V5C. But during the mid-1980s, it was converted into an open sports car, using historic or hand-crafted parts, with a variety of different vehicles donating parts albeit with the Popular providing the chassis, engine and transmission. The body is formed of plywood panels wrapped in aluminium and bolted to a steel frame of rectangular hollow tubes welded or bolted to the original chassis. There are components from 16 different vehicles, which were mainly sourced from scrapyards and autojumbles. Although most of the mechanical parts date from the 1950s, there are some from the 1930s. In Corsa form the standard rear-mounted flat-six 2683cc engine put out 140bhp, but there was also the option of a 180bhp turbocharged engine, which this one has. The Corsa also featured a 140 mph speedometer with resettable trip odometer, a 6000rpm tachometer, cylinder head temperature gauge, analogue clock with a sweeping second hand, a manifold vacuum/pressure gauge and fuel gauge. This 1965 car was imported into the UK in 2008 and registered here in March 2010. It has only had one UK owner since then. The result is that it is still in excellent, almost exceptional, condition inside and out; a real timewarp vehicle. The car has a fully-documented main dealer service history, being maintained by its supplying garage and having never failed an MoT - in 23 years, all have been passed with only the occasional minor advisories. The vendor believes this is reflected in how nicely it drives. The combination of a 2.5-litre V6 Eco-Tec engine and five-speed manual gearbox means this is now quite a rare vehicle on UK roads.
