The Incredible and rare, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) awarded to Sergeant Derrick John Allen, Air Gunner of 467 Squadron, who, on the 2nd of November 1944 returning from an Operation to Dusseldorf as  the Mid-Upper Gunner of Lancaster DV396 was attacked several times by a night fighter which left the Lancaster almost uncontrollable and with an engine on fire. As the Crew Prepared to leave the aircraft it was discovered that the rear gunner was trapped in his turret. Sgt Allen immediately went to his aid, knowing that the bomber could break up at any moment.  He used an axe to chop open the doors of the turret, having done this he succeeded in freeing the rear gunner and they made their way forward to bale out but before being able to do so the Lancaster broke up.  Sgt Allen found himself in mid air and pulled the parachute ripcord, landing in a tree after a very low descent, comprising, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) (1880966 Sgt. D.J. Allen. R.A.F.), 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, 1939-45 War Medal, all unnamed ad issued, mounted for war, very fine (4)Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) the London Gazette 6th of March 1945Sergeant Derick John Allen (1880966) RAF(VR) No. 467 Squadron (Australian)This airman was the mid-upper gunner in an aircraft detailed to attack Dusseldorf one night in November 1944.  During the operation the aircraft was attacked by a fighter. Sergeant Allen opened fire but the enemy aircraft closed in and the bomber was struck by a burst of machine gun fire which caused much damage.  A second attack followed and the aircraft was hit.  The outer port engine was hit and caught fire.  All efforts to extinguish the fire were unavailing.  Later the aircraft lost hight and later dived out of control.  The position became hopeless and the Captain ordered the crew to abandon the aircraft. The rear gunner was unable to open the turret doors and was trapped.  With complete disregard for his own safety Sergeant Allen promptly went to the assistance of his comrade.  The aircraft was now on fire and falling rapidly.  Nevertheless, this gallant airman hacked away at the turret doors with an axe and finally succeeded in freeing his comrade.  Just as Sgt Allen was ready to jump the aircraft broke in two. He fell clear, however, pulled the ripcord of his parachute and descended safely.  In the face of extreme danger this airman displayed conduct in keeping with the best traditions of the Royal Air Force. The Rear Gunner Flight Sergeant William John Lemin was killed when he hit the ground.A fuller account is includedOn the night of Thursday the 2.3rd November 1944 a force of 992 aircraft, 561 Lancaster, 400 Halifax’s and 31 Mosquito aircraft were briefed to attack Dusseldorf. Resulting from the nights operations 27 aircraft failed to return, 93 airman were killed, 5 injured and 29 became Prisoners of War.Lancaster DV396 took off at 16.31Hrs from RAF Station Waddington in Lincolnshire. The crew were F/O L.K. Landridge RAAF Pilot, Sgt J Halstead RAF(VR) Flight Engineer, Flight Sergeant D.G Beverley RAAF, Navigator, Flight Sergeant K.C. Woollam, Bomb Aimer, Flight Sergeant W.C. Denny, RAAF Wireless Operator, Sergeant D.J. Allen Mid Upper Gunner, Flight Sergeant W.J. Lemin Rear Gunner. After successfully bombing Dusseldorf Lancaster DV396 was attacked by an enemy fighter, despite evasive action and continuous defensive fire from its gunners.  The fighter made two sweeping attacks; both times the bomber was raked with machine gun fire causing much damage to the aircraft.  The second attack setting=g fire to the port outer engine. The crew desperately tried to save the crippled bomber and the attempts to extinguish the flaming engine failed. Loosing height rapidly the crippled bomber spiralling out of control the Captain ordered to abandon.  The rear gunner F/S Lemin could not open his turret doors to make his escape.  Screaming for help, Sgt. Allen went to his assistance informing the Captain of the rear gunners predicament.  The Captain, F/O Landridge , who was about to abandon the aircraft , promptly climbed back into his seat and took control to try to stay the aircrafts descent.  By this time the aircraft was completely ablaze and falling rapidly, never the less The Captain remined at the controls and Sgt Allen hacked away with the fire axe until his comrade was free/ With only seconds to spare all three airman made their exit as the aircraft broke up.  With little altitude left all three parachutes only partially deployed with catastrophic effect.  The Captain and rear gunner being killed instantly .  The Lancaster crashing into the ground in allied held territory.  Luckily Sgt Allen’s partially deployed parachute caught on the last reaming tree in a clearing in a forest.  The Captain F/Off Landridge for staying at his post was recommended for the Victoria Cross, but this was not granted.Sgt Allen was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal Flying and this was presented by His Majesty the King, King George Vi at Buckingham Palace on the 12th of March 1946.From Sgt Allen Flying Log Book467 Squadron27th September 1944 Ops Kaiserslautern5th October 1944 Ops Wilhelmshacen6th October 1944 Ops Bremen9th October 1944 Ops Walcheren11th October 1944 Ops Walcheren20th October 1944 Ops Walcheren1st November 1944 Ops Homberg No Bombs Dropped2nd November 1944 Ops Dusseldorf Bombed successfully.  Attacked by FW190 Abandoned aircraft landed safely 7 mls S/W of Spa. A Q- Ship Casualty Group awarded to Stoker 1st Class David Arthur Collingham. H.M.S. Bergamot, Killed in Action when Bergamot was sunk by U-84 on the 13th of August 1917 comprising 1914-1920 British War and Victory Medals, (K.28401 D.A. Collingham. Sto. 1. R.N.), toned fine (2)HMS Bergamot was an Anchusa-class sloop of the Royal Navy, which had a short career during World War I. Built by Armstrong Whitworth, the ship was laid down on 1 January 1917, launched on 5 May, and commissioned on 14 July.Four weeks later, on 13 August 1917, under the command of Lieut-Commander Percy T. Perkins, she was sunk in the Atlantic 70 nautical miles north-west of the harbour of Killybegs by the German submarine U-84, commanded by Walter Rohr.U-84s War Diary describes how he sighted a lone merchant ship, with no defensive armament (an unusual sight by 1917). Bergamot evidently sighted the U-boat's periscope, as she began to zig-zag at high speed. U-84 fired one torpedo – which hit on the port side – and Bergamot broke in half and sank in four minutes. Surfacing, U-84 sighted an unusually large number of crew (70) and pieces of wood floating. The U-boat's log identifies the possibility of Bergamot being a "trap ship". One of the indicators being the narrow beam in relation to the length of the ship, a sure sign of a warship. The torpedo struck her on the port side at 13 minutes to 9, entering the auxiliary engine room and destroying the dynamo and the bulkhead separating the auxiliary engine room from the main engine room. All the lights went out. Bergamot launched a "panic party" in lifeboat no.1, containing 31 men, but the ship lurched to port, both the bow and stern rising out of the water, and she sank too quickly for the ruse to be successful.U-84 approached Lifeboat no. 2 and asked where the captain was. They were told, "In the other boat, Sir" although actually he was on a small raft being towed by no.2 at the time. U-84 had both her deck guns trained on the lifeboat, but they believed the story and headed for lifeboat no. 1, now about two miles away. There, they went close alongside and hauled the ship's steward aboard, probably because he was the only one with a collar and tie on, and looked like an officer. Luckily, he stuck to the cover story, although questioned severely by Rohr as to "where bound, what cargo?" and was told to go back to his lifeboat, after having been given a glass of port wine and a cigarette, and after also transferring a wounded man that the submarine had picked up to the boat. With a cheery, "See you after the war!" the submarine disappeared into the night mists. At the moment of the explosion, Bergamot's first officer, Lieutenant Frederick W. Siddall, and her probationer surgeon, Robert S. Smith were both in her wardroom. The explosion jammed both of the watertight doors leading into this compartment, and Siddall was rendered unconscious. Smith piled the wrecked wardroom furniture up in order to reach the skylight in the roof, and then dragged the unconscious Siddall up and out of the compartment. Having reached the main deck, Smith worked on both Siddall and a wounded petty officer, who was lying on the deck with a broken leg and arm. By this time the ship was clearly sinking so Smith inflated his casualties life vests and lowered them both into the water. As Bergamot sank one of her depth charges exploded, badly wounding Siddall and again rendering him unconscious. Smith towed both his casualties to lifeboat no.2, which had left the sinking ship, containing 47 survivors, and then worked on Siddall for 25 minutes, administering artificial respiration, until he again recovered consciousness. Smith then treated the other injured survivors in no.2 over the 48 hours that the lifeboats were adrift until they were picked up. For these lifesaving actions, Surgeon Robert Sydney Steele Cathcart Smith was awarded the Albert Medal. The lifeboats became separated through the first night. Lifeboat no.2 set course for Loch Swilly, about 100 miles away, They sailed and rowed for three days before being picked up by the Admiralty trawler Lord Lister. Lifeboat no.1 reached the rocky shores of County Donegal where they were taken ashore by the coastguard.David Arthur Collingham was born on the 19th of March 1884 in Lincolnshire he joined the Royal Navy on the 21st of October 1915 stating that he  was an Iron Founder.  He joined Bergamot on the 14th of July 1917 and was Killed in Action on the 13th of August the same year.  He was the son of Hannah Collingham of 32 Old Bargate, St Botolph’s, Lincoln, he is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on Panel 22.Sold with an excellent file of 9 original pieces of Paperwork including the Original Royal Navy Telegram to Hannah Collingham stating:-“I regret to have to inform you that information had been received by this Department to the effect H.M.S. Bergamot was sunk by an enemy submarine on the 13th instant, and that David Arthur Collingham, Stoker 1st Class, Official No. K.28401, who according to the latest records at the Admiralty was serving aboard, was not amongst survivors who have been landed.  It is reported, however, that one or two Officers or men were recovered from the water by the enemy submarine.  In these circumstances it is regretted that your son must for the present be regarded as “Missing”An original photograph of David in uniform, Commonwealth war Graves details, Copy Service Papers, Copy Medal Roll confirming a his Pair, Copy Pension Records.

EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936, later Duke of Windsor & GEORGE VI: (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52. A good, unusual vintage signed colour postcard by both the young Prince Edward and Prince Albert of Wales, the future King Edward VIII and King George VI, the image depicting the Great Eastern Railway Express locomotive No. 1855. Signed (´Edward´) by Prince Edward and signed (´Albert´) by Prince Albert in fountain pen inks to light areas at the base of the image, one of the siblings also adding the place and date, Wolferton, 20th January 1906, in their hand to a clear area at the head of the image. Neatly laid down and framed and glazed in the original wooden frame to an overall size of 10 x 8. Some light staining and age wear, GProvenance: A typed note pasted to the verso of the frame states, in part, ´The Prince and Duke were given a ride on the footplate of the engine conveying them from Kings Lynn to Wolferton and they were allowed to manipulate some levers on the engine and they sent this picture signed by them as a token of their appreciation to the engine driver (Mr. Walter Griffiths of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England)´. Wolferton was a railway station on the Lynn and Hunstanton Railway line which was opened in 1862. The closest station to Sandringham House, royal trains brought the royal family to and from their estate until the closure of the station in 1969.

LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British army officer, archaeologist, diplomat and writer, renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916-18) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-18) against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. A good (and at times amusing) A.L.S., T E Shaw, four pages, 8vo, Birmingham Street, Southampton, 6th August 1934, to Albert Yarwood. Lawrence apologises for bothering his correspondent once more, explaining ´I have two cwt. of the best mahogany sawdust, dye, and granite chips and bitumen and felt nails.....but the magnesite cement and the liquid chemical defy me. We got what we thought was the right stuff - and it wasn´t, apparently. At least we mixed a sample......and after three weeks its as wet and soft as ever. Perhaps there´s money in it: a guaranteed drought-resisting compound. I´m going to see if it will grow mustard and cress´ and continuing to ask Yarwood if he can provide sufficient magnesite for the sawdust with which he hopes to cover a floor of 7 feet by 12 feet, requesting that the materials and invoice be sent to Mr. P. Knowles, and remarking ´Pat is my next-door neighbour and he and I have gone into partnership (Knowles & Shaw. very LTD) to build our respective shacks. We regret only that we cannot co-opt Mr. Heath Robinson as our hon. architect´. Lawrence also writes of letters he has received from Singapore regarding the steamer Aquarius, ´which seems to have been adopted as a Station pet! If she does half of what they ask of her, she will be a wonderful ship. The only criticism so far is that she is a bit hot, in the engine room. So I suppose the poor old chief is still sweating! He´ll qualify for a jockey in two or three years time´. In a postscript Lawrence urges Yarwood to charge him a proper rate for the materials, declaring ´Fellows should pay for their fun, and I´m having a lot of fun out of my cottage. If you saw my rack-and-pinion kettle-mounting, and the toasting fork on lazy-tongs. Labour saving to a degree. You have put me very much in your debt by telling me how to make this floor´. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Lawrence. A letter of wonderful content relating to Lawrence´s beloved Clouds Hill. A couple of very small, neat splits to the edges of two folds, VGAlbert Yarwood was employed in the family firm of shipbuilders, W. J. Yarwood & Sons Ltd., based in Northwich, Cheshire. The firm had built the steel screw coasting steamer Aquarius for the Air Ministry, and in particular the Fleet Air Arm stationed in Singapore. At the time, Lawrence was Clerk of Works for the Fleet Air Arm and had visited Yarwood towards the end of the steamer´s completion. The present letter, written less than a year before Lawrence died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident, demonstrates the passion with which he was working on restoring the floors at Clouds Hill, the isolated cottage he had purchased in 1925. Lawrence described the property as ´an earthly paradise´. W. Heath Robinson (1872-1944) English cartoonist, illustrator and artist, famous for his drawings of whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives.
