WW1 Royal Navy ‘submariners’ medal group to Petty Officer Minter, who served in the Royal Navy as both a Boy sailor & Torpedo specialist on submarines during the First World War. 1914/15 Star, impressed named J.14969, W. W. MINTER, A.B., R.N. War Medal & Victory Medal, impressed named J.14969 W. W. MINTER. L.S. R.N. Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 2nd issue, fixed suspension, impressed named J14969 W. W. MINTER. P.O. H.M.S. ENTERPRISE. B.W.M. shows surface scratches to face from star. Medals court mounted for display & come with full service summary & research paperwork. Rare to find WW1 submariner medal groups. Walter William Minter was born in Greenwich on 28 May 1895 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 11 November 1911. He was advanced Ordinary Seaman on 28 May 1913, and Able Seaman on 25 April 1914. Qualifying as a Seaman Torpedoman, and later as a Leading Torpedo Operator, he served during the Great War in H.M. Submarine B11 (of Commander Norman Douglas Holbrook V.C. fame) from 1 January to 29 October 1916. On 17 January 1916, the submarine managed to capture the crew of an Austrian flying boat after the aircraft had suffered engine failure while returning from a bombing raid. On 17 March, it was narrowly missed by a torpedo but was unable to locate the attacker. He later served H.M. Submarine E41 from 1 October 1918 to 2 February 1919. He was advanced to Leading Seaman on 1 July 1917, and Petty Officer on 1 September 1920. He served in H.M.S. Enterprise from 7 April 1926 to 31 January 1929, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 30 August 1928. He was invalided out of the service on 18 November 1931 with ‘chronic supp. otitis media bilateral’, which probably led to a degree of permanent deafness. He attempted to re-join the Royal Navy for service in the Second World War, and despite at least four applications between the outbreak of War and 1943 he was not accepted, presumably due to his deafness.

Served the last 4 months of the war on training ship Fisgard, earning a single BWM. Continued to serve on various ships/establishments for the next 23 years, earning his LS&GC medal in September 1933. He was serving as Chief Engine Room Artificer aboard H.M.S. Puckeridge, when he and 17 others were killed as a result of a ‘German Air Attack’.13/12/1941, whilst in passage, H.M.S. Puckeridge was in action with enemy aircraft off the Pembrokeshire Coast. She was hit on the quarterdeck by a bomb which caused an explosion in the 4” magazine. 18 ratings were killed and 20 wounded in the after messdeck. Y mounting was wrecked and lost overboard. Damage control measures were taken to deal with fires and flooding and the ship settled by the stern with the quarterdeck awash. After propulsion was restored, she made towards Milford Haven using engines for steering. She was taken in tow to HM Dockyard, Pembroke Dock by tug where casualties that could be found were removed for burial.
An important aviation group of medals and service log book and associated paperwork awarded to Albert Hart Crowe, comprising of Distinguished Flying Cross dated 1943 with Bar, 1953 Air Force Cross, 39 - 45 Star, Aircrew Europe Star with France and Germany clasp, Africa Star, Italy Star, War and Defence medals with full service pilots flying logbook service number 569307, first dated entry 30th June 1941. Albert Crowe trained as a pilot in June and July of 1941, later becoming flight lieutenant. Crowe was predominantly a Lancaster bomber pilot during WWII in 106 squadron. His pilots logbook includes multiple signatures from Guy Gibson and other Dambuster pilots including Hopgood etc including written comments from Guy Gibson "completed his first operational tour with extremely successful results, an excellent show - Guy Gibson W/C". Various photographs, paperwork and citations including confirmed target destroyed, caricatures, pay slips etc. During WWII Crowe completed 51 sorties and completed a total of 305 hours 55 minutes operational hours bombing various targets including Italy and Germany, including a bombing raid on Dusseldorf where Crowe was engaged by an enemy fighter and successfully managed to manoeuvre the plane to enable his gunners to shoot it down. Daylight bombing raids, bombing raids at 4000 feet, and details of Crowe's successful landing of Lancaster after taking off an engine catching fire at night with a full bomb load are also recorded. He successfully managed to land the plane with no casualties lost or any major damage. At the completion of WWII Crowe entered the Empire Flying School and became a test pilot for early jet planes where he received the Air Force Cross, which included flying jets into thunder storms to assess damage caused. The log book lists a vast array of aircraft flown and his exceptional skills as a pilot. Crowe later moved to the United States of America where he lectured and published a book 'Aircraft Engines and Systems' (copy included) and died in America on the 16th October, 1997. The lot includes commission certificates, full service log book, photographs, medal recommendations, copies of newspaper cuttings, paperwork from the Ministry of Defence relating to Albert Crowe's service history, a copy of one of his reports from Guy Gibson, includes "This officer has taken part in a total of 34 sorties on enemy territory. Apart from the many industrial areas he has attacked he has flown on mining sorties raiding from the Baltic to Southern France, all have been successful. His two most outstanding sorties were a daylight raid on Le Creusot when he kept formation with his squadron commander in the most adverse weather conditions, and the daylight raid on Milan where he bombed from 6000 feet. Pilot Officer Crowe has pressed home his attacks in the face of heavy opposition and throughout his operational tour has shown qualities of a splendid courage and determination." "I consider that S/LDR Crowe's fine operational record and his courage, skill and determination fully merit the reward of a Bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross." "On one occasion when detailed to bomb Dusseldorf his aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter but his skillful airmanship and crew cooperation he enabled his gunners to engage the enemy aircraft which was claimed as destroyed. On another occasion when taking off to attack Hamburg an engine cut out and caught fire. This officers coolness and fine airmanship resulted in his effecting a safe landing in the dark on three engines with a full bomb load. In recognition of his skilful handling of a grave situation he was on this occasion credited with sortie completed."
