Burtt, G.F. (compiler) Bound volume of original reference work relating to cross-channel and costal paddle steamers, compiled in the 1930s and comprising typescript notes and letters received in response to queries from Lloyds, shipbuilders, shipping and transport firms, railways and the Admiralty. 4to, half-leather; numerous leaves of typescript, letters and similar mounted or tipped-in. Frank Burtt was a railway engineer and draughtsman, as well as a keen photographer, postcard publisher and author. He first worked as an apprentice engine fitter at the New Cross Works of the LBSC. A talented though ''fiery little man with a trooper's vocabulary'', he was promoted to the Drawing Office at their Brighton works, where he served under a succession of Chief Mechanical Engineers, starting with Robert Billinton and ending with R.E.L. Maunsell. As part of this he was required to photograph new locomotives and he used this opportunity to publish postcards on the side. He would eventually publish cards of trains, steamers, and rural life around Ringmer, Sussex. He was a founder member of both the Stephenson Locomotive Society and the Institution of Locomotive Engineers. It is possible this latter helped when dealing with some of the shipping and railway firms with whom he corresponded, as his return address often mentions this association. As well as locos he was passionate about steamboats. He published his first book on the subject, Cross-Channel and Coastal Paddle Steamers, in 1934 (reprinted in 1937) and a second (his last book) on Steamers of the Thames and Medway in 1949. It seems likely the material gathered here was intended for these publications as it principally dates from the 1930s. In fact one letter at least is from a fan: A.T. Stace writes in invitation extended in the first book to offer praise and corrections to certain points about the Folkestone-Boulogne Cross-Channel service. Burtt also wrote four books in the Ian Allan ABC Locomotive Series and frequently used his own photographs to illustrate the works. The whole is a highly useful archive on the subject assembled by a dedicated, though amateur, expert.
