A. de Simone (fl.1860-1900) The steam yacht Erin on a cruise in the Mediterranean off Naples signed, inscribed and dated 'De Simone 1907' (lower right) and 'S.Y. Erin' (lower left) bodycolour 17 x 25 in. (43.2 x 63.5 cm.) Originally called Aegusa but renamed Erin when bought by Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea magnate, in 1898, she was built by Scott's at Greenock in 1896. Rigged as a screw schooner, she was registered at 451? tons net and measured 264? feet in length with a 31? foot beam. Powered by a triple expansion engine fired from two Scotch boilers, she was both fast and elegant and, having once passed into Lipton's ownership, soon became one of the most well-known steam yachts on each side of the Atlantic. Lipton's passion was to win the America's Cup and Erin served as his floating base for the unsuccessful challenges of 1899, 1901 and 1903. She was en route to the United States for a fourth challenge when war was declared in 1914 but promptly returned home after being fitted out as a hospital ship. Presented to the Admiralty who restored her original name as there was already an Erin in the fleet, she served as a hospital ship in the Mediterranean until torpedoed and sunk in June 1915.

A. de Simone (fl.1860-1900) The Royal Thames Yacht Club steam yacht Minerva cruising in the Mediterranean off the Neapolitan coast signed, inscribed and dated 'De Simone 87' (lower right) and 'R.T.Y.C. Minerva' (lower left) bodycolour 12? x 18 in.(31.2 x 45.8 cm.)"The steam yacht Minerva was designed and built by C. Hansen & Sons at East Cowes in 1875. Rigged as a screw barquentine, she was registered at 214? tons gross (114? net and 400 Thames) and measured 150 feet in length with a 24? foot beam. Powered by a Maudslay Sons & Field engine, she was a handsome vessel and, in 1887, was owned by Mr. Robert Ashton of Queen's Park Mansions, St. James's Park, London. He had purchased her from the Earl of Pembroke in 1885 and kept her until about 1900 when she was sold to Armand Peynaud of Rouen. Thereafter changing hands several more times, she was last recorded in 1914 in Norwegian ownership.

George Chambers, Jun. (b.1830) H.M.S. Agamemnon lying off Greenwich, possibly when loading the Atlantic Telegraph cable signed with initials and dated 'G.C. 61' (lower left) oil on canvas 18 x 24 in. (45.8 x 61 cm.)"The first Agamemnon to serve in the Royal Navy (1781 - 1809) was said to be Lord Nelson's favourite ship; it was obvious therefore that when the second was launched in 1852, she would have to struggle to make a reputation for herself yet, paradoxically, she succeeded twofold, once as a ship-of-war and then as a bringer of concord. Originally designed as an 80-gun Second Rate in 1841, the order to build her was suspended in 1844 but resurrected in 1849 as part of the wider campaign to introduce steam power into the predominantly sailing battlefleet. Selected as the nameship for a class of five 91-gun screw two-deckers, the new Agamemnon was laid down in Woolwich Dockyard in November 1849 and was launched on 22 n d May 1852. Measured at 3,085 tons, she was 230 feet in length with a 55 foot beam and could steam at 11? knots propelled by her 600nhp. engine. Completed on 27th March 1854 at a total cost of ?141,299, she had two decks bristling with guns of varying calibre and one massive 68pdr. mounted topside.
