Bentley Speed Six - 1930. A large format 'The Silent Speed Six' Leaflet No 31, dated January 1930. Possibly the first Speed Six brochure, 8pp including cover, with well-defined images of the engine, chassis, two and four-door Weymann -bodied saloons, component parts, specifications in green and black text. Some spotting and light soiling to the front and rear covers, ink manuscript at the top edge, but original cotton-tied spine intact. (1)
Bentley - Six Cylinder 6 1/2 Litre Model. Probably Bentley's first six-cylinder leaflet No 9 dated August 1926. 8pp including cover, well-defined images of the engine, chassis, two Weymann -bodied saloons, component parts, specifications and prices in red and black text. The original cotton-tied spine intact, albeit with a split top and bottom, water damage on the lower fore-edge of each page, some surface loss and the odd stain. Editorial good. (1)
Engines. A collection of books covering many aspects of motor vehicle engine types and including: Diesel's Engine - From Conception to 1918, by C. L. Cummins, 746pp, 1993, also by the same author, Internal Fire - The Internal Combustion Engine 1873-1900. 356pp, 3rd ed, 2000. Both books in excellent condition and for a technical subject, quite readable. Also, Rotary Valve Engines by M.C. Hunter, 216pp, 1946; The Petrol Engine by F. J. Kean, 124pp, 1915; Oil Motors by G. Lieckfield, 272, 1908, together with four other period books on the subject. All in good useable condition. (11)
Bentley 4 1/2 Litre. A large format 'leaflet No 32', dated January 1930. 12pp including the cover and featuring on page 10 and 11, 'The New Supercharged Bentley 4 1/2 Litre' illustrating the 'Le Mans' car with its Amherst Villiers Mk IV supercharger. Also, with well-defined images of the engine, chassis, sporting four-seater, Weymann-bodied saloon, component parts, specifications and the prices of the supercharged model with printed reductions. This publication has lost its cotton ties and is now held by a plastic spine grip. The pages are rather soiled and the rear page with some paper loss. However, a good working copy of this rare brochure. (1)
Trait‚ Th‚orique et Pratique des Moteurs a Gaz et a P‚trole, by Aim‚ Witz. Volume 1 only (of 2?). Fourth Edition, Paris 1903. Small quarto, pp viii, 504, text figures and engravings (one folding) illustrating carburettors, fuel types, engine arrangements, graphs and calculations. The half-leather binding very rubbed, pages a little browned with age, occasional small circular ink stamps of the 'Ecole Nationales D'Arts & Metiers', but generally sound internally. (1)
1930 Lagonda. A prestigious hardback and large format colour brochure dated March 1930. 24pp and free end-papers, covering the 2-litre Speed Model (Low Chassis) Tourer and imaging the chassis, engine and T2 body style with specifications. Also promoting the down-draft head 'Special' version and the standard saloon. Also shown is the 3-litre chassis, engine, touring and saloon bodies, with specifications. Together with the coach-built Tourer, Enclosed-Drive, Four and Six-Light Weymann n Saloons, with interior and facia views. In very clean condition, just a little paper loss on the spine, and knocked upper fore-edge. (1)

Dickenson, 255pp, 1938, missing its DJ; Walter Hancock and his Common Road steam Carriages by Francis James, 104pp, 1975 with DJ; Modern Steam Road Wagons 1906 by Norris, a 1976 reprint, and two other titles. Le M‚canicien Moderne. A two volume set published in Paris, circa 1910. Both quarto volumes with their blush grey and polychrome and gilt decorated covers. Pagination in each book is 232 and 233 (465pp) of French text with highly detailed images and drawings. Also, 10 full-page mechanical coloured folded-flap cut-a-ways of a Motor-Car, Steam Boiler, Steam Engine, Dynamo with 3 phase current, Locomotive, Gas Engines and Diesel and Oil Otto Engines, each with an explanatory index, unusually these are in very good condition. The covers a little soiled and the spines worn, otherwise a delight. (2)
The Automobile Engineer: A Technical Journal Devoted to the Theory and Practice of Automobile Construction. Four folio-size hardbound volumes (mixed bindings), containing the issues for Vol 1 (1910/11), Vol 2 (1912) Vol 6 (1916), 1914 (Vol IV), 1915 (Vol 5) and 1918 to 1920 inclusive (Vols VIII to X). All the bindings are a little rubbed and worn, especially the spines, those for 1918 and 1920 being in the original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to the front covers and spines. The volumes for 1914 and 1920 have copy title pages and index pages loosely inserted. All are clean and sound internally, with numerous text figures, diagrams, tables, photographic illustrations and other folding illustrations. Also included in the lot is a 67-page article reprinted from a contemporary 1916(?) issue of The Automobile Engineer, hardbound in recent black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, entitled: Enemy Aircraft Engines: Detailed Descriptions of Certain of the Engines in Use and The German Aeroplane Engine Trials. Rankin Kennedy C. E. Two sets of books by this celebrated author, The Book of Modern engines published in six volumes, revised edition dated 1912, full of engine descriptions, diagrams and pictures of all types. Unusually retaining their titled DJs. Also, The Book of the Motor Car, with its later printed and rare fourth volume, circa 1913 and 1927. Also a mid-1930s, highly detailed The Motoring Encyclopedea. Some soiling and scuffing, good working copies. (11)
Connaught Cars. 'Hand Finished-One at a Time'. An interesting book, double-fold opening broadsheet imaging the car, bonnet open and engine bay with detailed specifications. Also a similar- sized Alta 9hp Sports & Competition Cars, c1933, 12pp and grey card cover, detailed text and image of the car No 1. Delightful vignettes, and a Ferguson centre-spread cut-away. Cover slightly faded, otherwise both brochures are in good condition. (2)
Dyke's Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia. Fifth Edition, Revised and Enlarged, Containing 366 Charts with a Dictionary and Index. Treating on the Construction, Operation and Repairing of Automobiles and Gasoline Engines. A substantial, large octavo hardback volume in blue cloth with white lettering, the covers a little rubbed and marked, running to some 750 pages. Clean and sound internally, numerous text figures, pictorial end-papers, and published by A. L. Dyke, St. Louis, U.S.A., 1916. (1)
Bugatti Magnum by Hugh Conway, 1989, retaining its distinctive engine-turned slipcase and chassis plate numbered 1673. A comprehensive look at Bugatti history, the family, the cars, the company, the mechanics and the racing. The book ends with a list of racing successes, a register of chassis numbers and a bibliography. Limited to 2,000 numbered copies, 560 pages, 800 monochrome and 73 colour illustrations. In excellent condition. (1)

Together with other Sturmey Archer brochures. All in good, sound condition, a little soiling to the covers. (12)
*Toto III. A live steam, single-step racing hydroplane model of wood construction. Powered by a scratch-built single-cylinder engine, with direct drive via a balanced crankshaft to the two-blade racing propeller. The design incorporates a lubrication system via a two-cycle reduction gear driven oil pump, one to feed the steam line, the other branching three ways to the engine bearings. The tubular boiler is fitted with a paraffin burner, super heater, safety valve, sight glass, pressure gauge and other fittings. The boiler is mounted on four turned columns, and the hull is step ventilated with spray hatches covering the fore and aft sections of the cockpit. Steering is by a hand-operated Vernier adjusted rudder, and the vessel comes complete with a carrying box, alternative propellers, exhibition handbook, and a photograph of the boat in a 1930s exhibition. 36-inches long, 10-inches wide. *Beam Engine. A fine scratch built model of a beam engine, the cylinder with brass bound mahogany cladding, spoked flywheel, solid pulley wheel and round tapered column supporting the beam, the steps and galleries with handrails and perforated walkways, finished in maroon and black with yellow and red tiling, 37cm wide, mounted on a simulated black and white tiled base Provenance: from the collection of the Late Ron Wheele (1921-1998), purchased at Rupert Toovey Auctioneers, March 2009. Hand built by the late Ron Wheele who carried out restoration work at Brighton Toy Museum and the Brighton Engineerium. (1)
*Traction Engine. A well-engineered 1in. scale model of the single cylinder, two speed, four shaft general purpose traction engine, Registration No. JH 1420, built to the design of 'Minnie' by R.T. Gallienne, 1978, complete with brazed riveted copper boiler with fitting including water and pressure gauges, safety, blower, and clack valves and wash out plug, engine details include single cylinder 5/8in. bore x 1in. stroke, Stephenson's link reversing, ratchet operated lubricator, eccentric driven feed pump and by-pass, counterbalanced crackshaft, two road speeds mounted inside the horn plates and spoked flywheel, chassis details include worm and roller chain steering, spoked, straked wheel with brass hub caps, footplate controlled damper, winch drum, cable and fair leads, band brake to rear axle, tender tank and other details, finished in maroon, red and black and polished brightwork, the smokebox door lettered R.T.G. & Company, Chester, 29cm x 45cm Provenance: Christies, British Engineerium sale, April 1985. A silver hallmarked wooden lined desk cigarette box having engine turned design with AJN 1936 ( Arthur John Newbury Naval Attache to Singapore ) in the central cartouche to the lid and to the front inscribed presented By Katong Golf Club ( Singapore ). With Birmingham assay mark, date letter for 1935 and makers marks for Alfred Deeley. Measures: 8cms wide.
