RAINHILL TRIALS: MECHANICS MAGAZINE, MUSEUM, REGISTER, JOURNAL AND GAZETTE, three issues, comprising No 324 October 24th 1829, illustrated with and detailing The Rocket Locomotive Steam Engine of Mr Robert Stephenson; No 325, October 31st 1829 illustrated with and detailing The Sans Pareil Locomotive Steam Engine of Mr Ackworth of Darlington; and No 323, October 17th, 1829 illustrated with and detailing The Novelty Locomotive and Steam Carriage of Messrs Braithwaite and Ericsson, later 3.4 leather with Morocco mounted green boards, London, M.Salmon, Fleet Street. The engravings seen on the front of each edition are considered the first images produced of each engine, indeed the engraving of The Rocket is just 10 days after the Rainhill Trials. The trials were a competition to win the contract to produce locomotives for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Five locomotives entered and only Stephenson's completed the trials. Chapman Dendy Marshall, in his book 'Centenary History of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway', publ 1930 states that the engraving of the winning engine is 'The earliest known illustration of The Rocket is Mechanics Magazine for Oct 24th 1829'. The subsequent illustrations were considered inaccurate.
