The area covered by the detailed plans stretches from the Vulcan foundry and W. Polson Imperial starch works on Hamilton Street in the north, to the dye works and St. George's church on George Street in the south, and from the bowling green and dye works on Storie Street in the west to the Abbey on Abbey Street in the east. Even the key plan gives details of premises that do not fall within the detailed plans: for example Clark & Co., Anchor thread works, is noted as having its own private steam fire engine.
