Railwayana - a re-struck brass arched engine plate, Bayardo, 142cm long; a cast alloy number plate en suite, 55.5cm wide, (2) 'Bayardo' was the 36th locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway, a class A1 4-6-2 (Pacific) and a sister engine to 'Flying Scotsman'. It was turned out by the North British Locomotive Co. in October 1924, rebuilt as a class A3 pacific in May 1928 (as were the remainder of the class at various dates). It originally bore the number 2578, but was re-numbered in the 1940s as 79, becoming 60079 when taken over at Nationalisation and was withdrawn from service in Sepetember 1961. Most of the class were named after winners of classics, Bayardo having won 22 out of 25 starts 1908-1910 inlcuding the 1909 St. Leger.The nameplates were carried over the central driving wheel and the smokebox numberplate (here replicated) was applied after Nationalisation in 1948.
