Huskisson (William, as President of the Board of Trade, politician, the first fatality of the railway age, 1770-1830) Autograph Letter signed to "Dear Sir", 2pp., 8vo, Eartham [Sussex], 4th August 1826, "Have the goodness to send me by return of Post 1st a Copy of the late Commercial Convention with France", folds, slightly browned.*** At the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester railway, on 15 September 1830, Huskisson, having alighted from the train during a stop at Parkside, fell into the path of the oncoming Rocket engine while attempting to re-enter the duke of Wellington's carriage. Huskisson died that evening of his injuries.
