A fine and important Cornish Mining Punch Jug, from the count house of Wheal Ann. The pottery jug gilded on a deep blue ground showing an early steam whim with engine house and shaft head gear, a surface worker to the foreground, the reverse decorated with peacocks and a fountain. The jug named, "Wheal Ann" beneath the moulded gilt decorated spout, height 25cmNote: Wheal Ann was sited near Mellanear, Hayle. The adventure started in 1805, but despite finding a rich lode of copper there were many problems with water in the 42 fathom level, and in 1815 working ceased. There was a further abortive attempt to re-open in 1850.Provenance: Bought in these rooms on 5th November 1982. Complete with original catalogue, receipt and letter.
