LATHAM HUBERT: (1883-1912) French Aviation Pioneer, the first person to attempt to cross the English Channel in an aeroplane. Due to engine failure on his first of two attempts to cross the Channel, he became the first person to land an aeroplane on a body of water. Vintage signed postcard photograph depicting Latham's aircraft in flight and with a small inset circular portrait of the pilot in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the head of the image. Autographs of Latham are rare in any form following his early death at the age of 29 in somewhat uncertain circumstances whilst on an expedition of the French Congo. Most of the signatures have small ink numbers at their sides for identification purposes. A most impressive collection of signatures to be found on one piece. Accompanied by an A.L.S. by a Dorothy Smith of Ohio, dated 22nd April 1955 and providing the noted collector Reverend Cornelius Greenway with a list of the signatories on the cover and further including a second, partial A.L.S. by another, unidentified, individual offering the cover to a collector for a price of $15. Some light overall age wear to the cover and a few small tears and areas of paper loss to the upper edge, evidently caused when the envelope was originally opened. G, 3 Frank P. A fine 9-carat yellow gold case with hinged cover, unusual 'wavy' engine-turned decoration and the clasp with a firey cabouchon oval opal, 8.75cm high, approx. 79.7g CONDITION REPORT: The date letter looks like g We think this is 1962 and presuming that the assay office is London. There is no assay office mark on it. There are three cartouches, the first is 9, the second one is .375 and the third assay mark is the letter g. There are no splits. Being “super critical” in natural light you can see two very very minor indentations although at arms length these are hardly visible.
