λThe Haig Toilet Service, a fine 19th century French silver gentleman's travelling toilet service, maker's mark of J.D with a duck between, in a lozenge punch, circa 1870, the case inscribed 'Smal, Fcant, Palais Royal 7,' engine-turned decoration, with chased foliate borders, the centre with the Haig crest with foliate scroll mantling, comprising: a ewer and basin, the ewer of rectangular baluster form, with a detachable wicker-bound handle, on a foliate rectangular foot, a shaving hot water hot and stand, with a detachable turned ivory handle, and with a burner, a circular dish, a cylindrical shaving brush, four silver-mounted cologne bottles, screw-off covers, (one cover is stuck shut), five circular toilet jars, three oblong toilet jars, a hand mirror, and a rectangular toilet jar, plus a pair of inkwells, a dip pen, a mother-of-pearl handled desk seal, a mother-of-pearl paper knife, a large electroplated easel-back mirror, of arched upright rectangular form, plus steel and mother-of-pearl items: a pair of razors, two penknives, a toothpick/ear spoon, a corkscrew, a hook, and five other items, six various ivory brushes, an ivory handled knife and a glass, in a fitted boulle brass marquetry ebonised wooden case, with a stationery wallet and secret drawer, the cover with the Haig crest and the initials 'J.R.H', for James Richard Haig, length 47.5cm, approx. weighable silver 79.5oz. Provenance: James Richard Haig (d.1896), of Blairhill and Highfield Park, Sussex. And then by family descent to the current owner.
Early Aviation interest, a presentation silver double cigar and cigarette box, by Mappin and Webb, London 1911, rectangular form, engine-turned decoration, with chevron borders, the two hinged covers open to reveal wood lined interiors, with a central strap work carrying handle, inscribed 'The London Aerodrome, Presented by Messrs' Mappin and Webb, to the Women's Aerial League to encourage National Aviation. Ladies Aviation Day, Hendon July 6 1912, won by L.W.F. Turner', length 24.4cm. Major Lewis W.F. Turner of Blandford was in fact a man, famous at the time for daredevil stunts and for being the first pilot in Great Britain to fly at night. The reason that he won the trophy was because the wind conditions were considered too adverse to allow ladies to compete. Flight magazine wrote of this' This was to have been a red-letter day for British aviation, for special competitions had been arranged for lady pilots, the first ever held'. Ladies were only allowed to fly as passengers that day. Lewis Turner held the Royal Aero Club Certificate no.66, and he was the chief flying instructor at the Grahame Whyte School in Hendon. He flew a 1912 Voisin Type L plane. This plane was built primarily for the French and Russian military, and he spent four months in St. Petersburg in 1911 working on biplane design.

A large Victorian presentation silver paint box, by Edward Edwards, London 1846, rectangular form, the hinged cover with engine-turned decoration and inscribed 'Presented by the Society of Artists Clipstone Street to Edward Duncan Esquire in token of their regard and in acknowledgment of his long and valuable services rendered to the Soc. in his capacity of Treasurer, June 1846', the interior with a hinged palette and sixteen compartments for paint and one for brushes, the underside with two hinged finger rings, length 17cm, approx. weight 10.9oz. Provenance: A Private Collection. Alastair Dickenson Ltd. Edward Duncan (21 October 1803 - 11 April 1882) was an English master painter, known for his watercolours of coastal views and shipping. He was a member of the Royal Society of Watercolours and received Royal patronage from Queen Victoria. Duncan was a prolific exhibitor of his works, showing more than 40 at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists, and including more than 500 watercolours and drawings within the shows of the Old and New Watercolour Societies during his career. In 1833 he was elected a member of the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours, but he resigned in 1847 and, in 1849 was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. He died in Hampstead, London, on 11 April 1882. A sale of his works at Christie's in 1885 took three days; and a sale of 1887 lists nearly 2,000 of his sketches and paintings. Ref Wikipedia.
