A George VI Distinguished Flying Medal, Awarded to Flight Sgt. G.O. Greenwell. NB: Flight Sgt. Greenwell flew as navigator, started operation of service in December, 1943, flying in Sterling's Bombers with 90 Squadron. Joining No. 196 Squadron in May, 1944, taking part in operation Tonga (D Day), transporting twenty paratroopers and containers on the 5th June, and on the 10th June taking part in a special mission dropping seventeen SAS troops and containers, numerous other special missions taking place in July and August. During one of these missions on August 2nd, a special mission to Breast???, the aircraft was hit by flack losing one engine and badly damaging another. For this mission the pilot Warrant Officer Mark Azouz was awarded the DFC for returning his plane and crew back to England. The 17th and 18th September flying Stirling H, operation Market Gardener, glider lift to Arnhem, and on September, 21st whilst on a re-supply trip flying a Stirling ZO B, shot at buy flack and shot down by fighters, the pilot and rear gunner were killed, the remaining crew bailed out successfully and were repatriated. Complete with Observer's and Air Gunners flying log book, Royal Air Force service and release book, Defence Medal 1939-45, and the Caterpillar Club badge and membership card; together with December 2007 Issue of Fly Past from which a detailed account can be found of the last moments of Flight Sgt. Greenwell's stricken aircraft and the subsequent events.
UDET ERNST: (1896-1941) German Fighter Pilot of World War I, the second-highest scoring flying ace. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Udet standing in a three quarter length pose, wearing his uniform. In the immediate background appears the large engine of an aircraft. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink with his name alone across a light area of the image. VG
WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Royal Air Force Officer, inventor of the jet engine. An excellent vintage signed 6.5 x 4.5 photograph of Whittle seated in a half length pose at his desk. Wearing his RAF uniform, the pilot holds a lit cigarette in one hand in this official Air Ministry photograph. Signed ('F Whittle') in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area of the image. Together with Leonard Cheshire (1917-1992, British RAF Pilot of World War II, Victoria Cross winner) Book signed, a hardback edition of Cheshire V.C. by Russell Braddon, First Edition published by Evans Brothers Limited, London, 1954. Signed by Cheshire to the half title page. With the dust jacket. Also including a hardback edition of Bomber Offensive by Arthur Harris, bearing two unidentified signatures. A couple of very light, extremely minor surface creases and one small corner crease to Whittle's photograph, otherwise VG, 3
LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British Soldier, 'Lawrence of Arabia'. D.S., with his initials T.E.S., one page, small 4to, n.p., March 1933. The manuscript document, headed H.M.S. 203, is a technical report in Lawrence's hand relating to a power boat which he was looking to convert for use by the Royal Navy and R.A.F. Lawrence makes observations between 17th and 21st March 1933, reporting, in part, 'R. H. (Starboard) Hycad control jammed in mooring area and boat ran aground. Hull not damaged. Fair-lead and stem-shoe twisted and removed for repair. Hyland ram removed, and re-aligned on brackets. Return spring of forward plunger in Hyland pump found broken. Replaced by new one. R.H. (S.) engine oil changed. Three gallons put in.' Signed at the conclusion. Some extremely light overall foxing and a few minor spots of foxing, just affecting the text but not signature. About VG
